Pretty bad PPV overall. Bottom tier Rumble. Way too much bloat all around in the Rumble and the show as a whole.

Would call Mania better and I wasn't exactly a fan. I will say this show was better booked than Mania though.

I called it a PPV because it was hyped like a PPV presented like a PPV and booked like a PPV.

It literally being a PPV hasn't really been relevant to anyone but assholes and 70 year olds who don't know how the Internet works for many years now. It's not even relevant to WWE!

WWE marketed it as a network special and those have traditionally had cards that featured matches that were RAW or house show quality. That's the reason they do it; they want to make sure it feels special enough to watch but also not so special that you expect more out of it.

No they didn't. They had the stupid cutaways during the damn matches saying ONLY ON WWE NETWORK and hyped the full card on TV, actively building storylines towards many of the matches. That is not Network special level hype that is bog standard PPV level hype.

Did they really? I'd disagree. The only storylines that got built were ongoing feuds that likely didn't end from any of the matches today, and thus these matches were more like speedbumps.

-Styles/Nak wasn't built up as being some kind of conclusion or anything
-Usos/BB specifically was built up as if GRR didn't even exist since the storyline involves Naomi
-Rusev/Taker literally only got talked about because of social media/some Rusev interview and even then was basically a throwaway "It's happening, after all!"
-IC had no storyline
-Hell, Roman flat out said "I don't even know why this match is happening" about Universal

And so on

I'll give you the Raw tag match since it was the end of a "tournament" but really that wasn't a storyline, either.

They got segments. Would call that building to them. Like if the whole card was full of Rusev vs Undertakers and Cenas vs Triple Hs, and it was only mentioned in passing on TV rather than having whole segments and hype packages devoted to it, yeah, it's like Beast in the East.

But I mean even normal PPVs typically have a few "where did that come from" matches on the card. If you guys are seriously saying this is closer to Beast than Backlash in how it was built, presented, and marketed, then I simply say you probably don't watch the product at this point

There was more build here due to the money. The numbers for previous specials had been strong, and this was originally billed as a special house show. Due to the special nature of some of the matches, it became a televised house show. It is not a PPV. They aren't branding it in their material with other PPVs; it's being considered a special attraction. The build for it was nowhere near what a PPV's build is. Brock and Roman was given build specifically because of Brock's deal and the desire to see what kind of eyeballs this could attract as a non-PPV special attraction.

Shotgun Saturday Night never had a ten million dollar plus funding campaign for one show, so there is that.

I wouldn't say that, but I would say they didn't really treat it like a PPV much at all from a storytelling standpoint. Like, that part specifically suffered.

When you have stuff like Miz barely mentioning his title match the Smackdown the week of in favor of pushing a storyline that GRR won't even touch on, and have a storyline that flat out pretends GRR isn't even happening (Usos/BB), it's a bit tougher to take seriously as a big deal

That's on WWE, though

Read some interesting dirt sheet stuff on Braun Vs. Roman as the top guy. If the sheets are to be believed, the feeling is that Braun is popular enough to be a big draw without a belt, and thats why Roman is the guy. They feel Roman wont draw without a belt.

If that is true, wouldnt that tell management all they need to know about Roman? If they feel one guy will draw just as well without a belt and the other needs the belt to draw, the choice of who to go with seems clear.

When has there ever been anyone who has been a really popular draw without a belt who didn't have multiple long reigns with the belt before?

I guess they're looking at guys like Taker, Cena, Brock, and saying "they don't need the belt to draw" except all of them have had the belt a ton of times for reasonably long periods before, which is how they built up the credibility they now rely on to draw even without it.

(except Brock, who for some dumb fucking reason has had the belt for two years to the benefit of exactly no one)
