Quarterback, full back, half back, running back, touchback.

That's all I got but I'm sure there's more.

It's a position that plays behind the line (OL or DL) hence the 'back' in its title. A full back plays from further behind the line than a quarter back or running back.

So is running back an oxymoron then? I guess if he goes back and forth across the width of the field.

He's a back (behind the offensive line) that primarily runs the ball.

Until he gets to the line?

Or does the "back" term mean he starts behind the line? Which, doesn't everyone?

Some positions like defensive line and offensive line start literally on the line of scrimmage. They have no positions with backer in the name. Other positions start off the line of scrimmage like linebackers and defensive backs. Receivers usually play right up against the line but certain formations force them to have to be back off of it.

Really the only ones that screw this up are cornerbacks who sometimes play right up at the line when in press coverage.

Also of course this is just in general. Defensive packages especially have players from all over the defensive backfield lining up close to the line of scrimmage. But in general backer positions line up... back.

Huh

I guess you have think of the line as, like a rectangle.

Maybe in the old days but in modern football philosophy the fullback lines up right behind the quarterback and what they call half backs or running backs line up behind the fullback.
