After spending several years working on Capitol Hill and in the White House with the Obama administration, Martin recently made the move back to New York, getting a job with the city and finding a unit in a 5-story walkup on the Upper West Side.

On moving day this past Friday, Martin got an unexpected visit from the NYPD.

"I'm in my apartment but, you know, you can't go nowhere without the cops following me," he said in a video posted to social media.

It turns out, someone called 911 to report a burglary in progress and the suspect, the building's new tenant, Martin.

"Somebody called the cops on me in my own building. About how many are y'all? About six of y'all showed up, rolled up on me," he said.

"That was the only time I had to move, and I didn't think anybody was going to call cops on me. I mean, I was moving into the building," Martin said.

Without skipping a beat, Martin went live on Instagram, documenting the encounter with authorities.

An investigation later determined there was nothing criminal about Martin's activity.

He tells us his skin color along with the gentrifying neighborhood along 106th Street were obvious factors that led to police being called.

You have to be a special kind of stupid to see a someone taking boxes into a building and think they're burgling it.

There was a Twitter thread I saw last year where this black guy talked about being in CVS or something (some pharmacy-type store) to buy shampoo, and he sees a cop walk by with his gun drawn. Doesn't think anything of it until the cop comes back by, points the gun at him, and begins screaming for him to get on the ground. The guy immediately complied and survived, and ironically enough, had no issue with the cop afterwards. Nor with the store clerk, who had called the cops. His issue was with the 911 dispatcher, who took a call for "suspected shoplifting" and somehow transposed that into "active armed robbery".

i think this was fair & not racially motivated at all.

anyone who lives in NYC has probably heard of the latest crime trend, known as "reverse robberies." due to increased police surveillance, forensics, etc, regular robberies are pretty difficult now and reverse robberies provide criminals with an easy way to make a big score.

the way it works is simple: a criminal will case out a an apartment in NYC, noticing the schedule of the occupants and the time they are away from work. When the occupants decide to go on vacation (which is common in NYC since living there year round is so depressing), the criminal will strike.

First, the criminal will load a uhaul with (often stolen) furniture and boxes, such as couches, dressers, coffee tables, and kitchen appliances. He or she will then proceed to go to the apartment under the guise of a moving tenant, carrying the furniture up 5 flights of stairs. If he or she sees a neighbor, the criminal might say hi and invite the neighbor to come over for dinner sometime.

Once the "move" has been completed, the neighbor will go into the apartment to steal whatever 2015 MacBook Pro and Forever 21 jewelry the occupant might have stashed. He will load these into a briefcase.

From here, the criminal will spend the rest of the time pretending to "live" in this home, all under the guise of making his big escape before the customer returns from their vacation. He will pretend to "go to work" for 8 or 9 hours a day, where he will unload valuables into his car and wait in the parked car for hours, and he might even invite guests over for a "housewarming party" where he will offer the guests "hors d'oeuvres" and "sangria."

Then, the occupants return and the criminal departs, leaving them none the wiser and wondering where all this new furniture came from. The neighbors might go to the returning neighbor and say "hey, Moira O'Flannigan, this might sound crazy but I could have sworn last week that you turned into a middle aged black man."

This is a major problem in NYC and I think it makes sense that you guys fly off the handle about the racial aspect without having the facts and context.

I don't know. Seems plausible to me.

You're just replacing the fake pizza delivery guy with a fake furniture delivery guy. If they're robbing a high class enough place whatever they're fitting in a briefcase could be worth a lot more (and easier to sell) than the furniture.

I'd say good chance the caller was racist but who knows. See a guy who's never been in your building before and wandering around and maybe you call just to have the police check.

More important this guy sounds like a pos. Complaining about the cops and implying they're racist because they responded to a 911 call. Hope

Not really. That guy literally tried to break into his own house with his driver and then completely flipped his shit on the cops when they showed up. That was way more reasonable a reason to call the cops than this. That incident was massively blown out of proportion and flat out lied about.
