They'll say it's either a "typo" or "it's not english class who kurrs"

That statement can be true though sorry I'm in my phone but I'll give you an example....

Let's say this.....this guy I know keeps getting into problems at work he shows up late and barely does anything.....I could care less if he gets fired because clearly he doesn't care......the following days he shows up late and drunk he's even been written up twice....now I could care even less about him because he's not doing anything to improve and is only getting worse.....next week he goes to jail and gets fired.....he wasn't even my friend I just knew him from work, now that he's not even a coworker or I will most likely never seen him again I really really could care less about what happens to his ass.

It's a part of modern vernacular. I just heard it said that way in a TV show the other day. It doesn't really bother me though I say couldn't care less when I use it

Acknowledging the topic insinuates that there is a minimum level of caring. So they state they could care less i.e. not even registering the issue's existence.

I definitely didn't just make this up in my head.

If he said that he couldnt care less would mean he would have never said anything at all. Thus by acknowledging it, he went from a state where he cared less to a state that he cared enough to say he couldnt care less, thus he could care less

Maybe it's one of those things like when people don't want to answer "how are you" with "freaking terrible" so instead they say "I've been worse."

They don't want to say "holy crap who the hell cares" so they say "I could care less."

Of course the truth is they just don't think about it but you know

While those two phrases do not literally mean the same thing, in casual speech (for all intensts and purposes), they do mean the same thing.

Most people mean couldnt, but there are rare instances where could makes sense.

For instance, if you have kids, you could care less about them. I dont know why you would, but you could.

Saying "I couldn't care less" tells people that you don't care at all.

Saying "I could care less" tells people almost nothing useful. You could care a little, you could care a lot. The only thing saying "I could care less" tells anyone is that you do care.
