Any time I feel like I have a medical issue everyone says oh you should see a doctor. I dont have a family doctor and theyre impossible to get, and the walk-in clinics have shit doctors that only check a single problem and shove you out the door without actually taking the time to confirm the issue. Theyll just shove a prescription for some random anti biotic in your hand and kick you out the fucking door.

Do you not have insurance? Is that why you go to walk in clinic?

Because if you have insurance, then yeah just go to a real doctors office dude.

Unless it's different in Canada than the US:

You see a doctor when you have a medical problem. If you go in with a sore throat they have no reason to check out 47 other things on you.

What you're looking for is a physical. People should get one once every year or two.

So how do I get one of them?

I'm not sure how health insurance works in Canada but in the US you'd call your primary care physician (PCP) and say you want your annual wellness visit, which is usually free.

There has to be a list somewhere you can put your name on for a family doctor. Might take a while, but once you have a doctor it's easier afterwards.
I had to see mine not long ago, but couldn't get an appointment 'til like a month and a half later, and I wasn't going to wait for that, so the clinic my doctor is at scheduled me an appointment with one of their nurses, she did all the same check ups the doctor would have done, and gave me prescriptions for what I needed and blood checks and all that shit, and set up a follow-up appointment for the test results for the next week.
If I hadn't had a doctor, I couldn't have had half of that, I'd have had to waste time at the emergency room and see a random doctor who'd have just shrugged and told me to sleep it off.

It isn't.

General Practice, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, all sort of the same thing

Thanks. google says we have them here so I just gotta figure out how to schedule an appointment. I think.

Wait, are they the same as family doctors? Cuz those are impossible to get here unless you like, marry into a family that has one lol. My family doctor retired when I was a kid.

I'm with you TC in that doctor stuff can be kind of confusing. I don't have a "family doctor," either, I just go to the urgent care place on the rare occasion I need to go.

But like I have really been having a lot of trouble with my knee and its obviously not broken or something so going to urgent care would be dumb, I have no idea where to even go for something specific like that that isn't an emergency but should probably be looked at.

I have insurance and prefer the walk-in clinic. If I dont need to see a specialist, I can pay them $85 and never see another bill for anything they do for me. X-rays, shots, wound care, etc are all included. I tried filing with my insurance there once and had to pay more. Therefore, I just tell them I want the cash price. They dont see my insurance card, and I never see a bill. I think most would actually prefer this.

in America?
if you have insurance, go to your website and search for doctors in your network who are accepting new patients. look for "Internal Medicine" or "Family Medicine" and look at reviews on them online as well
if you don't have insurance, just search for the same but in Google instead of your insurance

either way, you just call and make an appointment. the first visit is pretty extensive and s/he'll go over your concerns and could send you out for blood work, write a prescription, or refer you to a specialist
it should not be an expensive visit
