pale ale

Hop forward, aroma can be pine, citrus, tropical fruits, low maltyness. Grass/green like aromas can be present if the beer is dryhopped. Usually golden in color, can be hazy depending on the malt bill and mash in temp. Flavor should mirror the taste, lots of citrus, grapefruit, berries, possibly spicy with little malt characteristics. Usually expect a low to mild bitter finish (potentially high if dryhopped) with a clean aftertaste that does not linger. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a great example of the style, with Black Abbey Crossroads being a personal favorite.

What do you think of dogfishhead

Great introductory brewery. Not to say their beer doesnt hold up to other craft, but for someone easing into the craft scene Dogfish provides a huge variety of beers to get into it whether it's a 60 Minute IPA to get into those green, bitter, hoppy notes, a World Wide Stout to get those caramel, malt forward, coffee and toast profiles, or something extreme like the 120 Minute IPA to get into that boozy, almost overpowering barleywine territory

any thoughts on lagunitas overall? I've been drinking a lot of their stuff lately. The hoppiness in a lot of it can burn me out sometimes but I'm curious as to what you think

Also, what general area of the US do you think has the overall best craft scene?

Lagunitas is ok for what they do, an everymans IPA. I personally wouldn't go out of my way for it nor would I rant and rave about it. Overall craft scene is probably Cali with North Coast Brewing, Russian River Brewing, Iron Fist Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Firestone Walker, etc.

This is a decent question (and was expecting it earlier). I'll have to come back to it later as I've had so many beers over the years narrowing it down to just 5 is a difficult task (with that being said I can absolutely say Orval is in there).

I do not endorse BrewDog at all. My personal opinion, I see them as a low quality brewery riding the latest hype train (re: sours) and using their marketing techniques to create a falsified image of a unique experience with their hotel scheme.

I mean fuck, their whole shtick and rise to fame was a 55% abv meme beer stuffed inside of dead animals. Once the whole high ABV controversy died down they jumped onto the next hot trend (aforementioned sours) and this stupid craft beer hotel nonsense. The beer industry would be better if BrewDog ceased to exist. They bring publicity, sure, but their product is awful (to put it kindly) and they rely solely on their "against the grain" marketing hype.

Their Punk IPA is nothing noteworthy. Its yet another generic IPA brewed with Simcoe, Cascade, and Amarillo. Not to say those are bad hops, but the IPA recipe has been beaten to death at this point. Show me something unique with Wakatu, Pacific Jade, Galena, etc hops, not these tried and true American hops you can find in any IPA within the reach of a thrown stone.

Wyeast 3068

Extracts can be okay. A local brewer uses actual peanut butter for one of his beers and it's quite impressive. I personally prefer using the real thing. I had a beer the other day that used chocolate extract and it was pretty noticeable as you could taste petroleum.

I look at the packaging to find the style of beer it is. I gravitate towards Belgian blonds/pale ales, and slowly towards pils. I generally try just about everything so I can expand my knowledge.

Oh sorry, the beer snob word is "pale lager".

I just know "it's fizzy yellow piss beer, or it's a half decent dark beer". That's where the snobbery ends.

So I'll rephrase.

High dollar pale lager, and Budweiser. Blind test. Go.
