I don't necessarily mean that in a negative way, but the modern hip hop I've been exposed to because it's so explosively popular sounds just completely alien. Like, when Kendrick Lamar's "Damn" was blasting to the top of everyone's charts I gave it a listen and I couldn't even get through half of the album because it sounded like repetitive, angry noises. Now that sounds pretty bad and condescending I'm sure, but I'm open to the idea that it's something I'm just not understanding or connecting with. I like a lot of post-rock that is largely droning noise aimed at making you feel generally shitty, so I know there can be something there. But how is this "hip hop"? When I think hip hop, I think rhythm and flow... it's a super silly example but it seems wrong to say this is in the same genre as Snoop Dogg.
