imo the best part of the queen is that she is a symbolic head of state, above the self-serving interests of the egocentric and self-motivated politicians who go in and out of office
when working at her best, the queen is able to rise above such matters and unify a society. she can set the tone and become the embodiment of the nation, of national character, without being another slimy politician

This and the fact that the U.K has survived a lot of wars and come out on top. Britain has been been the victors for 200+ years, and thus the need to abolish monarchy has never been much of an option. The Glorious Revolution nearly killed monarchy, but with some conditions the monarchs behaved themselves. Power also gradually dissipated to the Parliament, and thus the monarchy became a symbol of tradition, English identity and a tool of unity. The Royals are the constant.

Monarchy is used as a neutral head of state to have some kind of stability while governments change and to limit the effects of bipartidism (one side attacking the other).
