At what point do I not want to kill myself? Lol. No lie, I hate to say I suck but it took me a bit of time to beat chill Penguin and in all fairness, I didn't even realize I could charge my weapon ><

I'm on Spark Mandrill and I'm having a tough time making it to them. The one thing I have to say about this game is that they really know how to change everything up. Mini bosses and bosses don't have an exact rhythm...so Chill Penguin could do a dash at the start or jump on you...

The second half of Spark Mandrill is a real fucker with so many balls coming at my face that I thought I joined the cheerleader squad...

Dude if you think part 1 is hard wait til you play the sequels specifically part 5 and up.

I beat it when I was a child.

My step brother was 12 and was kicking ass at games better than a lot of people were. I feel like I missed that point in my life. I was too poor to have a Super Nintendo and by the time I was able to get truly into gaming it was Super Mario 64.

The one Mega Man game I did play a lot happened to be Mega Man Legends/64 and I loved it. I ended up playing X on my SNES and the first level was great, I learned a lot, and then went by boss order online and Chill Penguin wasn't too hard that I was willing to quit. Spark Mandrill have these little sparks in the ground that I can't even dodge properly.

I plan to try and beat them all even if there's a lot of trial and error. I'll be honest, beating Chill Penguin and getting the weapon gave me such a sense of accomplishment that when the legacy collection comes out, I'm getting it Day 1.

When I first played the game I found it a little difficult too, but you'll ease into it soon. Chill Penguin is by far the easiest of the 8 to fight first. From there you have a weakness chain you can follow. It's all about learning the weapons and what does how much damage to who.

As for the "balls" I assume those are either the triple cannon shots, or the fireflies.

yeah, I assumed that beating them in order would become helpful and when I saw that each one had a weakness, I'm guessing that when it said Chill Penguin, it meant I could beat it with just normal weapon without as much issue. I'd have beaten it sooner if I knew I could pack more damage.

And yes, I'm talking about the Triple Cannon Shots. If I even veer off screen for a second, an enemy will respawn and I have to dodge balls and the little 'car' looking enemies. I ended up just trying to dodge it all and I hate how random health orbs come out.

MegaMan is certainly a trial and error style series when you start out. Even though Mandrill is weak to Penguin's weapon, that doesn't mean you necessarily go there next. Another weapon from another Maverick may become useful to you.

A beginner's route would usually put Spark Mandrill's stage 4th in the lineup.

I didn't know that. I know that Storm Eagle was also another that would be useful here with the mini boss...I just assumed all sites said every route. I'll just google beginner's route and see what I come up with.

Fuck Chill Penguin first, then go after Flame Mammoth, then handle Storm Eagle. After you penetrate those three; go spend time with Sting Chameleon.

Once those 4 are defeated then it doesnt really matter who you go after next.

Also, i thought they were supposed to be doing a Mega Man X comic series(even posting a few short comics in the Mega Man comic) but I can't find any...so I guess there aren't any. The story sounds pretty cool and I've only had my hand in playing Legends and watching NT warrior.

I had the PSP remake Maverick Hunter X. It was pretty fun; beat X's story mode. Didn't finish Vile's, though.

Such a great game.

Chill Penguin is always first, but this is entirely because of the dash upgrade. The Spark Mandrill miniboss is a PITA that you don't want to fight without a few upgrades. In fact, on some playthroughs I save SM for last, mostly because of the miniboss. I'll either do:

Chill Penguin > Storm Eagle > Flame Mammoth > Armored Armadillo > Launch Octopus > Boomer Kuwanger > Sting Chameleon > Spark Mandrill

or

Chill Penguin > Storm Eagle > Flame Mammoth > Launch Octopus > Boomer Kuwanger > Sting Chameleon > Spark Mandrill > Armored Armadillo.

The question is whether I want to fight LO or AA without the weakness.

Sigma in X can be a real fight...or you can abuse a trick that lets you almost never even have to move <_< Even without that he's easier than some of the bosses that come before him.

One nitpick I have about the game is how uneven it is in terms of Mega Man's defenses.

When you start out, he takes three or four hits and he's dead. It's almost Ghouls 'n Ghosts levels of vulnerability. Then you get the chest armor which is only supposed to cut damage in half and it seems like enemies can beat on you all day without killing you.

The NES Megaman games are trash.

So was Megaman 9; i had it digital on 360 and shit was soooo boring

It's 20 min long but entertaing the whole way and is one of the best videos on gaming I've seen. It touches a lot on the sense of accomplishment you mentioned and goes into great detail on how you feel more powerful as you progress in game.

There was nothing of the sort. You're thinking of X6(even then, the description's a bit off). NPCs were just free respawning 1-ups in X5.

Armadillo without Electric Spark is tedious sure.
Octopus without Rolling Shield is, as I said, easier than fighting him with it.

Octopus's gimmick is spamming projectiles like nuts and your huge, slow, unwieldy weapon in Rolling Shield gets blocked and destroyed all the time by his mini-missiles. The only way you're ever hitting him with Rolling Shield is to do an awkward jump at just the right height to have the Shield drop on his forehead when you shoot it(opening yourself up to his missile barrages), jump higher to attempt bouncing it off the wall behind him(risking him jumping and hitting you, or worse, landing on your head to drain your health) or time your Shield shot perfectly at the end of his whirlpool move so he falls on top of it.

Unless you're trying to challenge yourself in some speedrun thing, the best way to fight him is to just take your time, use the Buster, never charge it and just spam the pellets like crazy, only timing charged shots when Octopus drops after his whirlpool move. You can spam the Buster faster than he spams missiles, and X's arm is at just the right height so that spamming bullets destroys the lowest missile which Octopus uses to hit you when you're both on the ground, while chipping his health away at the same time. This way, the only thing you have to worry about is his ray-shaped, somewhat-guided torpedoes which require a careful jump to evade; anything else is countered with said bullet spam and the occasional dash whenever he jumps/whirlpools.

Trying to use Rolling Shield on Octopus is unneeded unless you're trying to shave time in every way possible and have his attack patterns perfectly down pat. Heck, I'd go further and say that, in case of beginners, it's not even a viable tactic to use and needlessly complicates the fight unless you slice his tentacles off with Boomerang Cutter beforehand to eliminate half of his projectile capabilities.

If you actually want a (semi-)difficult fight against Octopus, take the former order you posted and fight him with the Shield. Or Shotgun Ice; that will prolong the fight and make it even harder for you.
