Can someone explain why every hour on the first planet took 7 years on Earth?

Is there a science for dummies answer?

Time dilation caused by the black hole. Time slows down for the observer the closer you are to a black hole.

Edit: now I am also watching this on FX. I own it, but fuck it. Should start again soon on FX West, so I'll switch over from the beginning.

A black hole has a crap ton of gravitational pull, so much so that it affects time and space around it.

The water planet very close to the black hole so time affected more so.

Time slowed down by a lot when they got onto that planet, but for the rest of the universe time still flowed the same.

Just started this again. Why the holy fuck is this this shit rated MA on TV when the actual rating is PG-13? This is like the tamest movie ever created. You can easily show it to a kid and they'll be left in amazement.

Like said, the gravitational pull of the black hole causes time to distort.

Reaching 99.99xxxxxxx amount of c has the same effect. Essentially speaking, this is the only possible way you can time travel. If me and you were to observe what happened on the first planet, all their actions would slowly take 7 years to play out for each hour.

Another way to look at is it that if we were to move the Earth by a black hole for a few years, potentially millions of billions years could pass outside the immediate effect of the black hole.

drag racing car going full speed, it goes fast. Pull parachute, parachute pulls car, it goes slow.

More gravity=more parachutes=more pull=more slow. Less gravity=less parachutes= less pull=goes fast.

This law of gravity applies to objects, actions, perception, thinking, seeing, time, aging, molecular movement, light... Even other gravities.

Welcome to science

Interstellar is one of the dumbest concepts in history.

Dust storm are destroying Earth. Let's go to a fucking solar system in a whole different galaxy, right by a fucking black hole.

They were better off just searching the billions of stars and planet in our own fucking galaxy.

Erm... It was in our galaxy iirc, and there were no other worm holes close by? Traveling from one solar system to another in legit across space fashion would take lifetimes, exponentially so for each further solar system within our own galaxy, not to mention an impossible amount of resources to sustain such a journey. And theres nothing wrong with being close to a black hole when you are locked in orbit. I mean, if wormholes are real then... That would be the way to explore other planets within any amount of researchable time, who cares if they are even in our own galaxy or not.
