thompson has been shutting down horford on the perimeter - he can guard him off the dribble and muscle him to clog his passing lanes. post defense is actually one of thompson's weaker points - so maybe they're trying to minimize TT's impact?

I don't really agree with that. LeBron's lackadaisical play hurt them a lot. They had lots of chances with the Celtics shooting literally 36%.

Again, if the Cavs can't shoot, they can't win. You have to actually have your shooters in to do so though.
