Majora's Mask

Yeah it's not exactly the most complex or layered story for a game, but MM is one of the few games where I got actively invested in the story to the point where I read into its lore a bit online. I loved all the subtle, implied aspects of the story, like Termina being a doomed community because it abandoned god, the Deku Butler's son, etc.

I agree with you this was my second choice.

I give credit to a lot of games, but I think that the Final Fantasy series plots are either simplistic and overrated or convoluted and overrated.

I remember Ogre Battle 64 really blew me away as a teen, so I'll say that.

But as far as best story TELLING, which is different than just a story, and I suddenly feel like talking about for some weird reason, I give that to Last of Us. It's the only video game that has successfully recreated movie-style story telling, imo. Every other game like it feels like it's just trying to emulate a movie but failing because it's a video game.

So far, there are 3 titles that have been mentioned 3 times, and all three were originally Japanese. Although idk if I would call MGS weeb shit. Quite the opposite, really. Its a take on Japanese peoples fascination with American culture.

Now that I think about it, most of the games that come to mind actually have really weak stories but are elevated by great characters and dialogue.

I think this is the case for a lot of games that people say have great stories. When in reality, very few video games have a well-written story. But the atmosphere, setting, and interactivity grasp the player in such a way, that they dont realize the story theyve been playing through hardly resembles anything close to a good plot. Anyway, what games were you thinking of when you posted this?

The Way
https://rpgmaker.net/users/LunCasari/games/

By far the best video game story I've ever experienced. It's one of those projects like Watchmen where they clearly planned out the world and mythology in extreme detail. It leaves many unanswered questions but presents enough evidence for you to piece together plausible theories for said questions (far more plausible than shit like what the true purpose of the temples was in OoT).

Metal Gear Solid for its complexity, and while convoluted at times, it left a lasrinf impression on me.

Chrono Trigger because it was very beautiful.

Silent Hill 2 for being rather scary and a horror story un that medium done right.

I understand all these games are great for gameplay, and that bolsters their standings, but the story made it for me.

I was going to say Phantasy Star I - IV, and I do still think the story is way above average, but there are some common tropes that take it down enough to where I wouldn't call it the best.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say maybe Metroid 1 - 3.

The story is a metaphor for the psychic link between mother and child, with the mother representing an energy-sapping, destructive force that the child must break free from. And the link is only broken when the child bears offspring of its own. This is why the baby Metroid saves Samus from Mother('s) Brain. There's some pretty weird symbolism going on in those games.
