People loved Pee Wees Big Adventure, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Batman was the second highest grossing movie in 1989, almost beating Indiana Jones...

These kind of movies would not be even close to as well received today as they were back then.

Must have been a really weird time at the end of the 80's...

Did I say I disliked any of the movies I just talked about? I love them. I'm saying that the masses wouldn't like something with that kind of style today, but for some reason they loved them 20 years ago.

They'd prefer MCU today. Which isn't bad either. They're just two different styles

You really needed to clarify your own position I think lol

But yeah, I don't think they'd do as well today either. People suck now and like lame things.

He wasn't the director of Nightmare Before Christmas.

Supposedly Batman Returns didn't go over all that great, which is why Burton was replaced as the director. I still love Batman & Returns, while enjoying Forever and &Robin for what they were (particularly &Robin, which was hilarious although I can't recall enjoying it as much at the time)

It's not that surprising that Batman (1989) was wildly popular, though. Jack Nicholson gave a tremendous performance as the Joker and Michael Keaton was a great Batman (as Jon Lajoie will you in song). And, up until TDK, Returns was my favorite Batman movie. Danny Devito's take on the Penguin was incredibly fun.

Sure, Burgess Meredith is probably still my favorite Penguin (mostly because he had the role for so much longer and, tbh, he's generally incredible), but Danny Devito comes damn close.

I can only imagine what the reaction to Batman was like when people were used to seeing the 1966 version of Batman on a screen. Must've been amazing.

I've never liked Tim Burton so I am glad I was young enough during the 80's where I didn't have to hear about it
