They have a mountain to climb to show people they are serious about fighting for those things. Even when they did shut down the government over DACA, they capitulated before work started on Monday morning, so nothing was really impacted. Back in 2011 they capitulated to Republicans on the debt ceiling, which set the tone for the next 5 years. And Republicans are not going to give them an easy opportunity to prove themselves by proposing unpopular legislation in an election year - the Democrats will have to create their own crisis.

The only real one with sense was Suprak who warned the Senate was very unlikely and the house is questionable at best also.

Even as their polls dwindled and as I said they don't matter, they kept moving their goalposts. Well, this um historical trend of fucking generic ballots says it should tighten then re-enlarge. Then to typical, well, that didn't to go the way we thought so time to ignore them all together which they should have been from the start.

When is the last time democrats got ahead of themselves and started looking for massive flips...

They let this conversation about Dodd-Frank repeal be about small banks, they let talk about environmental regulation be about small businesses, and then the Obama Justice Department did seemingly little to address Black Lives Matter.

Too often they let the narrative be "we're for common sense because the other people are clearly way out there" in an effort to appeal to moderates.

But i think political independents would be more moved by a vision for the future. I think running on systemic reforms like Pelosi and Schumer just unveiled- running to overturn Citizens United and reign in corruption - is a good start.

I don't think Bernie is farther left than Hillary on social issues. If you look at elections going back to Reagan, it becomes quite apparent that the real swing voters are the "Reagan Democrats," who are generally socially conservative and economically liberal. But Hillary's Democratic Party prioritizes social issues over economic ones, and that's a problem for them electorally.

They need to be able to talk about specifics. How do they plan to overturn Citizens United? It's a Supreme Court decision regarding the Constitution. They have to either appoint new justices who will overturn the decision or amend the Constitution to do it. Neither has any chance of happening for a long time.

Same with corruption. Are they going to ban lobbying? Can they ban lobbying and not get slapped down by the Supreme Court? If their anti-corruption drive ends up being reduced to banning the president from playing golf at his own courses with taxpayer funds, that's not going to a platform people can rally around.

Trump's personal attorney is getting paid off by Novartis while Trump is sabotaging the insurance market, spiking your premiums

Hillary ran more on Donald Trump being a piece of shit human being (plus her policies but no one paid attention to those!). That's not the same as the message that his actions are specifically hurting you. The former is easier to set aside.

This message also can (and should) be accompanied by "and this is what I'm going to do to help you instead", but it's the thread that pretty much runs through all of Trump's scandals (and the Republicans are tied up in it by doing less than nothing to keep him in check).

The Democrats support universal healthcare so much that when a Republican brought it to the Senate floor last Summer, it got zero votes from Democrats. It also got no support from Senate Democrats back when they had 60 seats and could pass Obamacare without a single Republican vote.
