...wait a week for 1/2 a payment?

Basically, my [wife's] cat has been having this issue the last couple days where he just sits in his litter box for over an hour. We figured it was guarding it from the dog (who likes to try to dig the litter), but she takes it to the Vet's office today, and we find out the cat has an obstruction in his bowel, and to correct it it will be almost $1800.

She calls and tells me they won't even consider doing the operation until they have half, and we wouldn't be able to pick up the cat until payment is complete.

I have the vet get on the phone to try to work something out, and to explain I get paid every other week, so paying any more than the $600 I currently have in the bank is impossible. Asshole won't budge.

I offer them the $600 today, plus a week of boarding fees on top of the other $1200 next week to do the procedure, if they'll do what needs done and I'd pay them in full when I get paid next week. Asshole still won't budge.

Apparently she's still there trying to work something out so the cat doesn't fucking die, but it really bothers me that these people refuse to help even a little bit, even though they'll be fully compensated.

I'm all for people getting paid for their services, but who the fuck would let an animal die over $300 that's guaranteed next week? Isn't that your entire fucking job?

Idk... This is fucking horseshit.

This is also why you should go to a vet that accepts credit such as from places like Care Credit which gives you 6 months to pay

Easy enough to pay off in that timeframe usually.

I had a similar situation with my dog. I was able to pay for it, but I hate the fact that it took that incident for me to learn that pet insurance is a thing. The next pet I get I'm gonna get insured, cause fuck those sudden health issues.

I have one down the road, the next nearest is over an hour away. I live on the middle of nowhere. Besides, they've been our vet for years, and we have never had anything like this happen.

This reminds me of stories about vets basically holding pets hostage and threatening to euthanize/let them die if people don't pay. I guess this one is just forgoing all that

Why are you defending your vet clinic? Go to a different clinic, drive the hour to another clinic there could be nothing with your cat bro. You're honestly going to take out pet credit line to pay the vet when dude could be totally lying to you... THINK.

A cat isn't exactly fair collateral on a $300 debt, and such an idea leaves the vet open to activists bringing in any and all strays for treatment and just leaving the vet with animals to care for that don't have owners.

And while you don't want to hear it, the "let it die" is something to keep on the table depending on the age of the animal and procedure's risk and chance of recovery. Any of us that had pets got there: spend thousands to treat a cat's cancer, or realize that cat is 15 (getting old by cat standards) and that I'd only be extending their life by a few months which would mostly be spent in discomfort or pain. I loved my cat more than most people, but I couldn't put her through that for my selfishness. Even with young animals, surgery recovery isn't always pretty.

Got it all sorted. Found a group/agency that deals in situations like this.

They agreed to cover the cost to the vet, and I pay them back plus a $50 service fee (more than fair on such short notice imo), and since it'll be paid in less than 30 days there's no interest or anything like that.

I've been going to this vet for years 3-4 times a year, and never saw the guy working today. No idea if he's new or what, but he was even against the way we were paying.

"We don't really like to go through third party payment groups"

I almost exploded, but somehow calmly explained that he's getting his money today, then he's no longer a part of the equation.

Our main vet is actually our neighbor and the head of the clinic, I plan to speak to her regarding the matter next time I see her. She's always been great, but I think it's time to start looking for a new one.
