One ps1 and four ps2's later, its finally the disc that's stopping me from playing this weird classic of a game.

I immediately bought one off amazon, and of course that one didn't work (front surface was very, very scratched) Never go with the cheapest Amazon version of a game.

I did find a good copy of it on Ebay for 15 bucks. The picture shows little to no surface scratches and the guy claims to test it in multiple PS2s and he has great feedback.

My original copy works in my PC but not on my silver PS2 slim. I've tested ten other PS1 games and many many PS2 games, they all work in this Ps2. It's a very late model, so I don't think it's the laser just yet. Both copies just have scratches on the label side that are kinda deep. I must have nicked it last time I played a few years ago or something and the PS2 laser isn't powerful enough to blast through it like my PC DVD drive.

I really wanted to play it this weekend :( It's one of my "summer' games.

I actually prefer the dungeon crawling digimon world games over the first, but even if i didn't understand the game back then when i was a kid, i really enjoyed the whole raising the digimon aspect.

That sucks though, no other way to acquire the game?

I mean I could emulate but it's not the same.

Thinking about maybe modding my PS2....lasers and discs are gonna last forever.

It's funny that it's cartridge games that end up lasting longer than CD-based games, contrary to the marketing in the 90s....

It's a fundamental rule of engineering that anything with moving parts will eventually break down. Modern consoles have a LOT of moving parts - disc drive motors, laser heads, internal fans, hard drive platters...

If it works fine on PC then burn a backup and soft mod that ps2. Literally just burn a back up and Google "swap trick ps2" and enjoy.

I miss Monster Rancher games. I know it was probably hecka sub optimal but the idea of hunting down CDs to find new monsters with was a cool af idea. A modernized monster battle sim that did that with my steam collection instead would be gravy mewtwo.

I liked how the GBA games were pretty much "enter random letters to create monsters"

and then you went online looking for shit other people entered and you would always get "your rank is too low for that monster" >_>

True, I don't expect PS3's and 360's to last almost four decades...Atari 2800 systems still boot!

It will be a sad day when PS2's stop running. I think it will still be a while. They mass produced A LOT of PS2 slims, and barring a few issues with certain models (the "ribbon cable scratching discs" got me last year--luckily all the games still play fine despite the scratch) and early PS2 slims had issues with the disc tray needing weight to start reading the disc after a certain amount of wear.

If you ever seen a Silver PS2 out in the wild, grab it up. I think it's one of the better revisions.
