I get a flagship every two years or so

Might be different with this Google pixel 2. Gonna see how long it lasts.

idk I haven't purchased a new phone for myself since I got the Note 4 when it came out. Haven't had a reason to.

Definitely flagship every 2-3.

Why go through the hassle of getting a new phone every year especially if it's never top of the line?

Get a refurbished flagship. Pay mid range prices for a product that's completely fine so long as you don't mind like, a scratch on the back or something.

Also buy outright instead of contract.

I buy a high quality phone a year or two after its release, and then use it until I lose it or it breaks (ideally 3-5 years)

If you use apps or the internet, you definitely need to upgrade at least every 4.

I bought a Galaxy S3 in 2012, and replaced it with a Meizu M3 Note in 2016. Before the S3 I only ever had cheap shitty phones (mostly old-style dumbphones, though the last one before the S3 was a cheap shitty Huawei smartphone), and I haven't yet replaced the Meizu, though I'm considering upgrading to the M6 Note sometime this year.

(For those who haven't heard of Meizu - honestly, do yourself a favor, check them out before you buy your next phone. The M3 Note is almost on par with the Galaxy S6, yet cost about $350 here when the S6 was still over $1000. It's proven to be a very reliable and fast phone, with amazing battery life.)
