Who on Earth was the CEman who said this movie had no heart? It had heart in spades, more than anything else.

Alden did well, Donald IS Lando, Emilia was much better than her stiff acting as Dany.

Enfys Nest is a boss.

The movie makes the Star Wars universe feel bigger rather than smaller.

My issue with the movie was that it was a constant stream of tension. Action scene to action scene without the typical build up in a star wars flick. Usually SW progressively increases tension until you get to a giant space battle with ships and/or jedi. Seeing as there was neither, it just felt like fan service putting a couple references from the OT on screen.

For what it's worth, I thought Alden and Donald did great in their respective performances, but they were constrained by a story that I don't feel necessarily needed to be told.

It left me feeling like a generic action film with a star wars theme rather than part of the SWU. I'd much rather prefer spin-offs to introduce novel characters in new locations inspired by existing SW lore.

It was a shallowly enjoyable film, but I didn't find it very memorable.

I was planning on seeing it tomorrow and was pretty excited. I heard good things and I thought Lando was the perfect casting.

Now I don't I know if I'm gonna watch it. You gushed about the mediocrity of 7 and the absolute shit that was 8 and I no longer have high hopes for solo.

Eh I can kinda see that, but there were definitely slower universe-building moments too. Dryden's yacht, Sabacc, talking with Enfys, etc.

I mean I don't think it was an essential story but I think they did it well enough to justify telling it. And I do think it adds some new layers to Han's character and backstory, as well as expanding the world around the organized crime of Star Wars.

Also Teras Kasi reference boiiiiiiiiiii

I wouldn't say fantastic but it was quite a bit better than expected

Alden and Donald were definitely both closer to Harrison Ford and Billy Dee respectively than I expected them to be, and Donald especially at some points had the mannerisms and inflections down perfectly

I think a lot more people probably saw Deadpool 2 than Solo. Since Deadpool 2 only came out last weekend I imagine a lot of people were probably waiting til this weekend.

It would have to be several years out anyway unless they want to start releasing more than one Star Wars movie a year.

The funny thing is that Star Wars 1313 was ultimately cancelled because Visceral wanted to do their own game which was a heist game set in the Star Wars underworld. That eventually also got cancelled.

It's like these games are cursed.

I wonder if the game would have tied into Solo if it worked out. I'm guessing it was supposed to be EA's game this year so it would have had the right timing.

Yep

Hennig wasn't interested in making an open-world space game; she wanted to write a linear action-adventure game, like Uncharted. They'd keep the idea of scoundrels in space, but for this new project, Hennig wanted to tell a heist story. Star Wars meets Ocean's Eleven. Soon it had a new codename: Ragtag.

Everyone I asked about Ragtag's story was unanimous about one thing: They all thought it was awesome. The lead protagonist was Dodger, described as a "cracked mirror version" of Han Solo, and over the course of the game he'd battle alongside a band of fellow misfits like Robie, a gunslinger and Dodger's partner in crime; Oona, the daughter of a mob boss; and Buck, the veteran leader and mentor of the crew. Set between the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, Ragtag would focus on the impact of Alderaan's destruction and tell a story about criminal families, scoundrels, and action-packed heists. "This was the coolest shit I've ever seen," said one person who saw the story. "[Hennig] had total buy-in from the start on that. Everybody was buzzing."

In order to distinguish Ragtag from Uncharted, a point that EA's executives felt strongly about, Hennig and her team came up with some lofty ideas for gameplay. You'd play as multiple members of the team, and each would have their own AI minds and abilities when you weren't controlling them. There were no Jedi powers, but one big theme was "sabotage" you'd be able to manipulate the environment to distract and divert enemies in non-violent ways.

These ideas were incredibly ambitious. "Picture the Death Star, and they all have jobs," said a person who worked on the game. "One Stormtrooper was on a command unit, moving boxes around. Some guys would be droids. It was supposed to be set up so it was all real, and it felt like they had jobs to do. We wanted to tap into emotions, so you could mess with Stormtroopers' emotions. Go into a room, turn the lights off. He goes back in and turns them back on. Then you turn them off again. At a certain point he starts getting spooked, acting irrationally, and bringing friends in."

Yeah really, it was so mild and so fit his character.

But I also saw meltdowns from "the left" about how it was "cowardly" to say outside of the film that he's pansexual or w/e and not show it in the film when...it pretty blatantly (if, again, mildly) shows it in the film. L3 tells him to stop flirting with Han, who he calls "baby" in his smooth way. Not sure he needs a 5 minute monologue to the audience about his sexual identity.

I thought it was a well-constructed movie with good performances from its ensemble of actors, well-done action scenes, and a logical easy-flowing plot. By all standards it was a good movie. And I'm happy I went to it.

That said, the entire time there was this pointless feeling to all of it. I don't feel like I learned anything knew about Han, Chewie, or Lando. We knew Han was a scoundrel with a soft-spot. Which he was in the beginning of the movie and was at the end of the movie. We knew that Lando was a suave, swindling, player who lost the Falcon to Han in a bet. We saw that happen but didn't really learn anything. We knew that Chewie was rescued by Han and thus owes him a life-debt and is also trying to find his family. Again we see it but we don't come away with anything new about it.

Sure we didn't know about the new characters but we did know that none of them were really relevant or around by the time we meet Han later. I enjoyed Beckett, but he basically told you his fate with the betrayal speech. Qira was cool, but you knew she wasn't flying off into the sunset with Han so the real question was whether she was betraying Han or getting killed. The other characters really didn't have enough time to get attached to.

To Qira's credit she was involved with the single most exciting moment of the film and I do look forward to see where the series goes from there, but that was mostly unconnected to the Solo plot and could probably just have easily been added into a different, less well-known story.

They were boardering on a really quality film, but it fell short in several grating ways. Maybe if Ron Howard had been involved from the beginning

The movie lacked a lot of weight. There were moments where I could see the makings of a more lasting film, but the overall tone and structure were disjointed. Han shooting Beckett first, for instance, shouldve felt more impactful than it did. Hans turncoat and Qiras betrayal shouldve been more than a shrug of the shoulders. It was just all too clean.
