This is my first time actually being able to negotiate how much I'm gonna be paid, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I looked at average salaries in Austin for people who have the certs I have and threw out a number that was in between the minimum and max I saw. The person I was talking to about this tried to push back because they do annual bonuses, but I just said something along the line of "Yeah, I'm aware," and then she said she'd work on getting approval for how much I'm asking for.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to handle this differently or not.

I did recently. I told my boss "I don't see myself being able to support a family and pay bills, a house mortgage and all the normal stuff now, and honestly I don't see myself still being able to pay for those things 5 years from now. I need something reasonable".

He didn't give a shit about me still, though.
