Who just shouts "Fair trade!"? That's legitimately deranged behavior. Like, "Schizophrenic Homeless Person at the Intersection" deranged.

At least he restored the respect for America that Obama destroyed. Think about how worse it would be if they didn't respect us?

Meanwhile the republicans see nothing wrong as they count their money and their corporate masters yank their chains for more tax cuts and rollback on employee rights and protections

I just don't get it. Everything I see this guy do is counter to the interests of America and the American public. I can understand certain regulations or legislation that I don't agree with, but this is irrefutably harmful to our economy and diplomacy. This is causing active damage to the US. That is the definition of sabotage. I don't understand how anyone, even the President, can perpetrate that legally.

Nobody advocating for a tariff has a right to bitch about fair trade.

Or a free economy.

Gonna post what I put in the other topic:

https://fee.org/articles/the-smoot-hawley-tariff-and-the-great-depression/

Summary: In 1930, President Hoover levied taxes of up to 40 to 60 per cent on imported goods under the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, in an effort to protect United States businesses and consumers.

However, the results of the act saw a number of negative effects: national income fell by 36 per cent, unemployment increased from 3 to over 25 per cent and 40 per cent of all banks were permanently closed.

---------------------

A recent example of negative effects of protectionism can be seen as recently as 2002, when then-President George Bush impose tariffs on steel of between 8 and 30 per cent, to be in effect until 2005. The European Union threatened retaliatory action and the World Trade Organisation ruled against the United States, seeing the tariffs removed. However, the United States Dollar index fell from 115 in January 2002 to a low of 81 in January 2005.

---------------------

Trying to do bilateral deals with EVERYONE and slapping tariffs on goods and services, particularly imports, leads to LESS jobs, reduced national income/savings, and higher costs of goods and services.

---------------------

>_> I'm not even American, but I'm pretty passionate about free trade and globalisation in case you couldn't tell

I mean, it helps a lot of countries... just not us, and I don't get why that's tolerated or even legally allowed. I don't believe that anyone outside of Trump's circle actually believes that poorly informed economic decisions that have such wide ranging implications are going to produce a single benefit for America.

This is why Trump doesn't deserve credit for the economy. He's just leeching off Obama's success. It's clear he's a moron that would send us into a global recession if left to his own devices for long

This.

(incoming Godwin's law)

It's a stretch, but theoretically, the Smoot-Hawley tariffs can be linked to political extremism in the 1930s and the rise of Hitler, and World War II, the most globally devastating (economically and bloodiest) war in history.

I argued that in my most recent essay. Got 81/100. I know it's not that good compared to the geniuses of CE, but my professor was pretty impressed with my arguments.
