okay after playing a while as h im

Chomp is b.r.o.k.e.n

god damn his reach will catch anything from the center and his power can easily send them straight to the wall with a max charge shot and nobody ever manages to catch a following drop shot

Tried Peach for the first time.

Went 2-0 against Waluigi, 2-0 against Spike, 2-0 against Chomp, and finally 2-0 against Bowser.

That was unexpected!

This game is fucking great. So glad it's living up to its potential. I was really hoping the mechanics had depth when that Direct dropped and now being able to confirm they do is great. These matches are so intense.

Just won my third tournament and I think I also went perfect 2 - 0 games in that one! (My first match may have gone 3 - 1 though, can't quite remember.) First tourney I won with Bowser and the last two have been Chomp. Yeah, dude is legit almost broken tier with that reach and only being slightly less powerful than Bowser.

Also am I the only one who struggles pulling off Zone Shots? I can never activate them right, though I seem to be getting better. Do you hold R or just press it? I think you just press R in the star and then press A immediately after? That seems to be working for me now. Previously I'd always enter zone speed by accident because I was holding R.

Also also, next things I need to get good at are blocking specials with zone speed and lobs/drop shots. Are there shortcuts to lobs and dropshots? Right now I think it's A then B for a lob and B then A for a drop, but I hear there's another way to do them?

I've noticed that too with the Zone Shots. Every time I try to do one, the ball just hits me in the face. Other than that, I'm having a blast, though. This game is suuuuuper good. I'm really excited for the full release. I hope they do something about Chain Chomp. The second-most powerful character in the demo really shouldn't be given the longest reach.

All that said, I finally won my first tournament! Only took me 14 tries.... >__>

But I kept getting to at least the third round pretty much every time, and I had to try out all the characters. I personally like Rosalina; her serves are insane, and her reach is pretty good. Spike is my #2, followed by Peach.

A good Bowser player is a thing to be feared, I've learned. I got absolutely smoked by one, 8 points to 1, in my second finals match, and that 1 was a Return Ace he just didn't position himself quite right for.

Oh, but against my second Chain Chomp, I pulled this off.
https://twitter.com/MrSmartGuyB8/status/1003168692144705543

Screw winning a tournament, that's definitely my greatest achievement so far.

Hmm, interesting! I'm used to the a + b method now but I'll have to try that and see which I prefer. I checked out the tips and tricks menu too and on top of also explaining that way of doing lobs and drop shots, it's loaded with useful info I didn't know. Like countering top spin charge shots with slices -- and vice versa -- to reduce knockback. You can also counter charged flat shots with another flat shot to do the same. Also had no idea you can use zone shots from a serve.

Lots of cool info like that, so highly suggest checking that out. I also didn't even know about star shots this whole time, even though I kept seeing "star shot winner" after a point and wondered what the heck those were.

Alllright I'm done for my second day, just past the 30k mark w/30839 points~

23 tourneys, 136-28 wins/loss (164 matches)... now that I'm well trained with Chomp I haven't even lost a single match in forever, possibly the last 64 matches since I remember coming up on the 100th match is when I got into this zone oh man

yeah Chomp is just flat-out broken, I kinda feel bad facing some people when all these unavoidable moments get them oof

my last one was a Chomp vs Chomp and he was actually really good, turned out he has about my level of points too no wonder... couldn't get him in 2 rounds, but at least pulled out a 3-1 set match

https://twitter.com/B8Gmun/status/1003190970186285056

Too long for the whole thing but man really had to switch up my shots and even account for countering his topspins/slice because of damn Chomp knockback, he was getting lots of charges in this match.... Goddddd I love the mechanics of this game so much, it's just so intense.

as for Zone Shots, I generally just hold it and make my way to the star, just keeping it held until I jump. If you're not perfectly on the star yet you'll go to Zone Speed first, but you can just Zone Speed into your Zone Shot

also there's literally nothing more satisfying than knocking someone's racquet to 1hp, and then getting their energy emptied in time for the Match Point and pretty much force them into breaking it on a final Zone Serve, barring some super good skills/luck.

Charging your shot also gives you a fighting game-esque meter gain, which is visible rather than Power Tennis's "your racquet will glow when you do it enough". You gain different abilities using this meter:

-By slowly depleting it, you can slow down time, replacing the Defensive Power Shot from Power Tennis by making balls more accessible. Balls that fly past the back out zone are still unable to be gotten.
-By using a quarter of it, by standing in a star area, you can use a "zone shot", which lets you pick where exactly on the court you want to hit the ball. If your opponent returns it, their racquet durability goes down one of three pips.
-By using full meter, you can use a special shot. This has the same properties as the zone shot, but if your opponent doesn't time a return exactly right, it will instantly break their racquet.

Racquet durability exists for zone shots and special shots. If racquet durability goes down to 0, the racquet breaks. If all of your racquets break (and you get two total), you get KO'd and automatically lose.

You can now perform 'trick shots', which basically move your character a set (long) distance to return the ball and build a ton of meter. Missing them by having poor spacing is very easy.

Waluigi is no longer objectively the worst and is viable. Likewise, speedy characters are no longer top tier, power characters are.

Meter seems to be very well-balanced in general and flows naturally rather than being a distracting element, and it no longer ends up as "who uses their power shot first" in a game of chicken like Mario Power Tennis was.

That's one hell of a record GMUN. I'm 3x wins over losses and I feel great, but your record is just impeccable. Of course a lot of my losses were very early on and now most of them are in the finals (which is so much more painful though).

I'm nearing 10k points now and trying out new characters besides Chomp. Just won a tourney on my first time playing as Rosalina! She's really fun. Man curving those serves is great.

Also feel like there are probably a lot of amatures indeed playing Chomp, so I wouldn't automatically be scared about facing one. Played a couple Chomp ditto matches against some Chain Chumps myself. Also had the same guy back out on me twice in a row in what was supposed to be a Chomp ditto (it connected me right back to him when I searched). If you're scared of facing a fellow Chomper, you don't deserve to play him imho.

Aaaand I had my most epic rally ever in a Chomp ditto -- 80. Hit. Rally. For match point nonetheless. Felt so fucking good winning that. I think there were like 4 specials used in that single point alone. Don't know if I'm gonna top that!

Titles: 3

3 tournament wins in a row and KO'd a racket on championship point on that last one. Most satisfying feeling ever. These tournies have all been decimations too -- now that I got blocking down to the point that even specials are no problem (as long as I have enough energy to zone speed a little), the dynamics have totally changed. And getting used to holding X instead of pressing it for drops and lobs has also made all the difference in the world. God I feel invincible. If you see a Chomp spinning around in circles like crazy after every point, that's me!

Also 65 matches in and I've only encountered lag twice and they were very early on matches. Even one bar connections seem to be no problem.

Was going for my fifth championship in a row and barely lost to a Peach with 120k points after saving like six Championship points. Yeah, after I saw how many points this person had, the loss was a lot less devastating. Pretty damn proud that I put up a fight to someone with almost 12 times my point total. Wonder how long my tourney streak would have gone on for if that hadn't happened though.

I was mostly losing for the first while, came down to 2-1 sets with him at 40 and me 15, managed to Deuce it, the deuce lasted *FOR FUCKING EVER*, but at least I was always getting the Advantage.

Finally win the set, and on the Tiebreak I just cleaning him out 7-0. I compleeeeetely demoralized him omg aaaaaaaaaa that felt good

I am so sold on this game

^

When I say it was at 2-1, it was him 2 me 1, so if he won that 1 point forever ago he'd be good but I managed to come back with a complete bloody vengeance

Since getting good with Chomp I haven't really had any close matches barring the 1 that I lost against a really good Spike at a 6-6 Tiebreaker :(
