but fuck Kathleen Kennedy

why is this a thing?

Are you actually asking why this is a thing, or are you simply stating in the form of a question that you disagree with the premise that it's a thing?

solo's bo? I don't get it i really liked this movie but see it's not doing that well

I promise you it's because most people either didn't like, or outright hated TLJ.

I've actually heard Solo isn't that bad, but fuck Kathleen Kennedy. I'm not giving Disney another dollar as long as she's still employed.

what do you have against kennedy? and imo this movie was better than tlj, easily.

I've noticed a weird uptick in Kathleen Kennedy stuff over the last several days I'm just wondering if there was a particular catalyst for it

With Solo's box office grossly underperforming (Disney had to adjust their predicted earnings), along with the clear downwards trend in profit among the new movies, there are rumors that Kennedy may get kicked to bring in someone else to run things. Since she's the current president of lucasfilms, the general failure of the franchise is being laid at her feet.

EDIT: And to be clear, those rumors have spawned a pile of articles, which is probably why you're seeing a general uptick. For example

She was made co-chair somewhere after the end of the prequel trilogies, and when Lucas sold it to Disney she was then made president. She's had full creative control over the Star Wars movies starting about 3 years prior to TFA coming out.

I wonder if they intend for an upcoming Star Wars Story movie to explain Snoke. That whole period in general is wide open. Only the novel Bloodline really gives any insight into it as far as I know.

Bloodline had some stuff on the First Order in general but nothing on Snoke really.

In Aftermath there's some allusions to something/someone that might be Snoke but we dunno for sure.

Though I imagine Snoke's origins or whatever will be covered or explained more clearly in the Resistance tv show that's coming out whenever

Well at this point why even bother

TFA made like $2.5 billion
Rogue One made a billion
TLJ made $1.5 billion
Solo under-performed tho def

I fail to see a "failure of the franchise"

Not liking TLJ doesn't mean the franchise is failing

The Last Jedi made more than Rogue One though. I'm sure Episode 9 will make way more than Solo too.

I think there's a weird group of people who think everything they hate about modern Star Wars is because of a woman.

TFA made 2.5, TLJ made 1.5. That's a CLEAR downward trend in their mainstay franchise
Rogue One made a billion, and Solo is looking for far underperform that. That's a CLEAR downward trend in their spin off franchises.

I'm not saying they didn't make money, but you're conflating "turning a profit" with "meeting expectations" and those are two very different things. Companies like Disney use the profits from big tentpole movies to fund other efforts. It's baked into their yearly budget. A movie like TLJ doing a billion less than the last one means that there were likely many projects outright canned because their funding was reliant on profit expectations baked in from past performance.

This attitude was super productive at rebooting Ghostbusters.

In addition, Kennedy herself is one of the most successful living film producers

I sincerely doubt she's getting canned any time soon.

I don't remember Disney saying that TLJ didn't meet their expectations. I'm pretty sure the second movie in each Star Wars trilogy always trends down and ticks back up for the third.

The spin-off stories are in jeopardy for sure. But that was always going to be a bit more risky.

The Last Jedi will soon end its run with around $625 million in the U.S. and Canada, about $200 million short of several Wall Street analysts expectations. While few thought it would match the $937 million domestic and $2.07 billion world-wide gross of 2015s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the franchises return to the big screen after a decade away, analysts forecast the new film would come closer.

Tbh I think it's because they're playing it too safe. Look at all the spin-off films currently

Rogue One
Solo
Kenobi

They're all set between Episodes 3-4 and deal with established characters/events

Hopefully the trilogies with the Game of Thrones guys and Rian Johnson go elsewhere. I think when the spin-offs start exploring the unknowns people will be a lot mor einterested

Very very seldom does a movie even in a tentpole franchise break $2,000,000,000

Exactly my thoughts. Solo was good and all but ultimately felt like filler and added nothing to the overall franchise

That says a few Wall Street Analysts. Not Disney. We don't really know what they're talking about behind the scenes. If Disney find the formula that gets a billion each movie I don't really think they care that it's down from TFA. They've just found out the hard way that the spin-off movies don't guarantee it.
