What if the after-life is sad? Both these celebs could have waited it out say after the weekend. Imagine Robin Williams being surrounded by sad people.

The times in my life when I've come close were when I felt like I was stuck.

How exactly are you supposed to move away when you're 4, 13, 15 years old?

I haven't watched a lot of Bojack Horseman, but what I've seen, it covers stuff like self-destructive tendencies and how hard it is to pull yourself out of a cycle. The "cure" for depression lies in motivation, but the problem is motivation is precisely what depression strikes hardest at. Whenever you feel like you're making progress, every setback feels magnified and it's as if you're taking two steps back, so you just fall into despair.

Eventually you just get to point where everything hurts on an emotional level and you become somewhat numb. Then suicidal thoughts go from being unnerving to peaceful and comforting. Just the thought of suicide feels good when you're depressed. Then the person decides to take the plunge and do it.

Eh, this is pretty close. At some point it just doesn't matter any more, and you're tired.

Hayame Zero posted...
When it comes to having a family, suicidal people often times do it because they feel so unhappy and worthless that they honestly believe their family, even the children, would be better off without them. That they're a hindrance due to some trivial or arbitrary failure.

This is obviously irrational, but mental illness is not exactly rational.

And this too. You can know, rationally that it (probably) isn't true, but that doesn't change how you feel. It's almost an intrinsic knowledge that you're fucked up and they'd be better off without you in the long run.

I don't trust people that don't "get" depression etc

Why?

because I can't trust their advice or they're willingness to have sympathy for a person's situation and may make an unfair harsh judgement

I understand that. I guess maybe "get" means something different for me.
I don't fully understand depression and can't say I've experienced what it's like. I believe it's a real thing and am very sympathetic to it though

oh, well that's fine then. most people have trouble sympathizing with something they can't comprehend because they've never experienced anything like it

The thought of non existence is more comforting than life, for some.
That can be a realization reached after an innumerable different scenarios that leads a person to believe that.
Some don't get the support they need in order to see a different way.
We don't live in a society of prevention, we live in a society of aftermath.
That's a big part of the problem.

How much more can we use it up?
Drink it dry?
Take this drug?
Looking for something forever gone
But something
We will always want?
Why why why are you letting me go? she says
I feel you pulling back
I feel you changing shape
And just as I'm breaking free
She hangs herself in front of me
Slips her dress like a flag to the floor
And hands in the sky
Surrenders it all
I wish I could just stop
I know another moment will break my heart
Too many tears
Too many times
Too many years I've cried for you
It's always the same
Wake up in the rain
Head in pain
Hung in shame
A different name
Same old game
Love in vain
And miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Away from home again

The so-called psychotically depressed person who tries to kill herself doesnt do so out of quote hopelessness or any abstract conviction that lifes assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fires flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. Its not desiring the fall; its terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling Dont! and Hang on!, can understand the jump. Not really. Youd have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.

Holy shit that is a perfect explanation

Agreed.
