I quit. Just do it. It's cliche but you have to want to quit. I was a daily smoker and haven't smoked almost 5 years.

The biggest thing is knowing your triggers, the things that make you want to smoke. I loved smoking at night, putting on my headphones and walking around NYC. Getting over those habits was the hardest part. And honestly, having all that extra free time. A cig or two here and there throughout the day can add up. So just learning to sit with it is tough.

Now when I pass someone who's smoking the smell is absolutely sickening to me. Made me realize how truly terrible/addictive they are cause when I smoked nothing smelled more delicious to me.

I could have quit years ago. I have no intention of quitting at this time. Too much else to deal with.

I never really took addictions seriously because over half my family were smokers until the '80s then they all just went cold turkey and it was as if they'd never smoked at all. That's why I put so much stock in genetics playing a huge roll in becoming addicted.

I quit two weeks ago. It is hard, it feels like shit for several days and I think the only thing that really helped was that I was sick and didn't want to smoke for a few days anyway, and then I was able to just take that mentality and carry it forward.

Statistics show that quitting cold turkey is more efficient than weaning yourself off of cigarettes over two weeks.

They say that nicotine withdrawal symptoms are worst at 3-5 days after you last smoke, so if you are quitting outright and not using patches or gum or anything you might consider quitting on a Thursday.

Also realistically most people do fall off the bandwagon the first few times, but the most important thing is to just keep trying and don't give in to the cravings.

It might help to know that...

The symptoms DO go away. I felt like I was living in a haze with this feverish fog in my head for a couple of days straight and I just felt like if I smoked that would clear it up. But I didn't smoke, and it went away on its own.

The cravings also go away relatively quickly after they start. You might do some push-ups or do deep breathing or go for a walk when you have a craving until it passes.

Remove the temptation. Leave your lighters at home, leave your cigarettes in the car.

It is a struggle dude. I'd be lying if I said I've done it "perfectly" - over the last two weeks I have had a few cigarettes on separate days. But after you've quit for several days you get your sense of smell back and you realize it doesn't taste that great and that kind of helps in my opinion.

Most important thing is that you have to want to stop, which is super generic advice but it's true. You gotta find reasons why you want to stop and then think about those reasons when you want to light up.

I had to quit smoking weed and I couldn't drink cause it would make me be irresponsible and smoke. I always associated the 2 cause I started them in the same year. The other night I smoked, took xans and drank. Blacked out the whole night, which is bad cause I was in public with a friend. Haven't found my waleet since...I need to clean myself up.

Try on days off days. Like, don't smoke at all for a day then smoke normally the next. Slowly bring down the amount you smoke on "on days" until you're at 1 or two, then quit cold turkey.

It worked for me for the longest time (about a year no smoking). I still smoke now but have way more self-control and will have 2 or 3 daily versus half a pack. The hard part is that, if I have any more than 3 in a day, I'll break all of my cigarettes in half and not buy any for a week. That's the only way I keep it at 3 lmao.
