For example, if a man was stranded on a dessert island and all he had to eat was pork and beer, God would rather she ate and drank in order to survive than follow his rules and die.

I'm not Muslim but that always stood out to me. I think it's a surprisingly astute and profound piece of logic to come from religion.

God is also okay with people changing genders when stranded, apparently. Though I'm sure there aren't many dessert islands out there with only pork and beer available to eat.

the thing about pork being banned in ancient religions is that pigs were filthy, easily spread diseases, could ruin other neighbors lands pretty easily when not strictly watched and controlled, and maintaining pigs on a plot of land used up extreme amount of resources. it just wasn't fucking worth it for most low-tech civilizations and the custom was worked into religious edict.

now we have tech to maintain pigs but religion isn't exactly releasing a patch update to recognize this fact. so "LOL eat pork and have a ticket to hell for eternity!"

Even muslims always found it silly because if you were dying of thirst and there was only an alcohol nearby, that would just make you die quicker instead of just, you know, water.

The pork thing maybe has real world applications, like if you were stuck on an island in the legend of Zelda wind waker, you could hunt those pigs you're supposed to take pictographs of and eat them for sustenance.

Just saying if anyone was wondering, this has been discussed between arab muslims at least.

yeah, this. pretty simple for the people from that era.
guy A: "pork are bad, they are spreading diseases and tapeworm. how do we get people to stop consuming them?
guy B: "i know, lets ban them through religion! if God forbids them, then they will obey."

Pigs will eat anything, even people, so that part's not true. But the history of how these two things were banned is interesting. Which ties into why tobacco isn't labeled haram (also because money > religion if you can believe it) and why technically narcotics and hard drugs weren't explicitly stated to be haram in the quran either. Only alcohol existed back then.

That's why it was more "hey, did you notice that when the villagers eat that animal, they tend to fall ill and die?" "well shit, that must mean God doesn't want us to eat that"

Is there any evidence that pigs spread diseases more easily than other livestock? Or that they're more difficult to prevent from straying onto neighbouring land, or use up far more resources than, say, goats or sheep who have a pesky disregard for imaginary boundaries and a tendency to overgraze?

I thought its cause pigs have parasites unique to them, not because they spread diseases the way mosquitos do. I think pigs have a type of worm that likes to incubate in them and if you eat an infected pig, you're in for a bad time. nowadays, in the US at least, the only cases of that happening is when people hunt wild boar and don't cook it properly

I find it a tad implausible that people are rational and knowledgeable enough to recognize a linkage between eating pork and illness, but nevertheless ignore the known risks and continue to raise pigs and eat pork anyway, and it's not until someone finally tells them they're pissing off a supernatural entity that they decide to stop.

I mean, how ancient is the history of raising pigs for food in the Middle East? Why did no one think before all these superstitions that eating pork might be a bad idea, if the supposed risks were so widely and well known? Why did it take some half-baked nonsense about the will of God before pig farmers packed in what was presumably a long family tradition and consumers gave up bacon at last?

It's like people having long known the links between smoking tobacco and cancer, yet refusing to stop smoking and only giving up cigarettes after God tells them it's bad for their spiritual health.

I'd say that whatever forced the change in diet (let's face it, it was probably the dire threats of punishment by anti-pork zealots), it had little to do with a common sense acceptance that pigs were a bit nasty. Otherwise, people wouldn't have farmed them and eaten pork for so long.

Yeah, there are plenty of plants that are intoxicating without the need for special processing. Animals even avail themselves of them on occasion(reindeers are quite fond of magic mushrooms, for example).
