Finally got around to downloading and playing this game. Been wanting to do it for years, given the obscene amount of time I've sunk into Oblivion and Skyrim. So far, the world is beautiful and diverse, the lore has a lot of potential, the quests are pedestrian but with room to grow...

...but the combat and exploration are complete and utter chores, to put it as politely as I can. Okay, I get that Morrowind is an old-school die roll RPG with the facade of a 3D action /adventure game. I can look past that to a point. But my god, will the whiffing never end? Call me crazy, but I grew up on RPGs where missing an attack was the exception rather than the overwhelming norm. And this wouldn't be half as frustrating if the enemies didn't have high to perfect hit rates. I try to go into fights with a decent amount of stamina, I'm trying to raise my Agility as best I can, and I'm dumbing down my weapon choices (because having a higher-class weapon seems to contribute to missing), but none of this is really making a dent overall. There's something seriously warped about a game when I suddenly feel ecstatic over actually hitting an enemy more times than I whiffed.

The exploration would actually be quite fun; I love the old-school vibe of reading your journal and following directions instead of walking towards a minimap marker, and like I said, the world is a treat so far to explore. But holy fucking shit is this game mired in molasses. 'Running' is about as fast as normal walking in the later games, and it drains your precious stamina, thoroughly gimping you if you come across an enemy in the overworld.

Ironically enough, the legendary Cliff Racers themselves haven't bugged me in the slightest, no matter how many of them there are. They can't be blamed for the game's combat imo.

At my current point in the game, I got fed up mid-quest for the Mage's Guild (3rd quest, going after the mage who didn't pay her dues) and am near Marandus trying to make my way back to Balmora, hoping that I can get there without triggering my last Major / Minor skill and get some Spear training in (and hopefully a +5 Endurance bonus) before leveling up.

So in lieu of advice, kindly rub my temples and tell me everything's going to be all right. I want to keep at it and start getting into some quests that actually have some meat, but the game is dangerously approaching that point where the frustration outweighs the ruin and starts tarnishing me towards everything about it.

Nah, mashing the right trigger while looking at my computer hoping that a hit lands eventually is the truest sign of a gaming masterpiece.

I tried out Morrowind a few years ago after having played Oblivion and Skyrim. I had the same complaints you have. I didn't experience this game when it was new and interesting, and going back to try it having already played the newer games didn't make for a great experience. No nostalgia factor for me.

Wow, ten thousand Cliff Racers later I finally found Punabi. I really feel like these guys would have been thoroughly mundane enemies instead of legendary terrors if it weren't for Morrowind's overall tedious and patience-draining combat in the early game.

It is also a very perverse thing that Rats are among the most dangerous wildlife I encounter.

I can already tell that if this game was remade with modern graphics and combat, it'd be among my favorites.

I...really don't wanna. It has to at least be more useful than Oblivion's H2H, right?

I recently tried to play it too. I recommend getting the Boots of Blinding Speed and do the resist magic trick ASAP. Sure its cheating but holy cow does it improve things. Well, movement at least.

Morrowind is one of the GOATest of all time RPGs and games generally, modded or unmodded. I god damn love it.

But if you aren't having fun just play something else. It's fine.

I like to get all the speed buffs I can on a new character. The Stallion (I think it's been awhile) makes walking/running much more bearable

If you're not using the boots of blinding speed then you're not really playing at all.

If you don't used the console to increase your speed, you're really not playing.

The Lady (again not sure) is a good sign to start with too. Pumps up your personality and endurance.

Also it's The Steed that pumps up your speed.

I went against my better judgment and chose the Atronach, believing that the benefit would outweigh the cost on a warrior-type. I've been mostly wrong so far, thanks to a game that never quite grasps what 50 percent is. Doesn't help that so far I've found a grand total of 10 restore magicka potions in the game, courtesy of the Mage's Guild chest. Reliably leveling magic-based skills is out on this playthrough, as I haven't even gained a single fucking level in Alteration yet (one of my majors). Hopefully it'll pay off later.

And yes, in hindsight, if I'd known the game was going to be both slow and punishing, I'd have definitely taken the Steed.

And I'm playing on the XB1, so no mods / console this time.

the game definitely has a trial by fire approach and can be really realy brutal and tedious in the opening hours, but through leveling it really feels like youre improving your character that a lot of games really forgo in favor of ease of use.

been a long time, but from what i remember leveling into weapon types will slowly eliminate the constant misses. i recall having around 30-40 pts in long blades and rarely missed with my katana after that. you can also utilize the enchanting system which pisses all over the ones in oblivion and skyrim to the point you can easily break the game in all sorts of hilarious ways. if you think your going too slow then enchant some boots and then role play the flash and clear the entire island in 30seconds. if youre pissed at the stamina system then enchant some gloves that constantly regenerate it.

theres an insane amount of systems in the game that allows you to play it how ever you want assuming you can overcome that initial learning curve.

Ah, the blissful realization that Punabi would have been like fifty feet away if I'd taken a left turn instead of a right turn at that fork three fucking hours ago.

No. The great thing about Morrowind is that it has game mechanics that are long dead. People like Morrowind for the game and what it brought (No leveled mobs, no random loot, no bull shit like that), being IN the world

At least IMO

And all of that stuff is great, no sarcasm. If they could remake the game merely with updated graphics, modernized in-world combat (ffs just have your skill level affect the damage output), and maybe some expanded voice acting, it'd be paradise.
