They're going to play restricted RPS

I don't see why you wouldn't team up with another person basically. Play all your rocks first, then papers. That gets rid of cards while remaining at 3 stars. At that point you only have scissors left so you can't even betray each other to off-chip them, you play the last four cards and you both win the game with three chips.

I think it might be because he borrowed so much money. I think he's trying to get more stars to get more money to pay off the new debt.

Don't worry, it gets worse

I feel that seeing the card was paper was an educated guess more than proven but the way they played out the episode was like Kaiji put together the pieces of a rigid puzzle. Basically his reasoning didn't convince me, maybe it wasn't concise enough. The biggest thing he had was that they wanted to knock off an odd card, but who's to say they didn't have a spare Rock or Scissors by some happening?

Also when he slammed down the card YGO style it reminded me how the whole formula of all TCG shows is busted and revolves around the audience not knowing what cards exist in the world and what card the protagonist has set face down

Kaiji was banking on the fact that people assume he's not reading them to that extent. If it fails and they had some fringe cards, then that's just the way it goes. He lost the gamble.

He doesn't always go for the 100% guarantee. In fact, most of his reads always still require a ton of luck and pieces falling together. You could say he also reads that his opponent will just act regularly, considering his former losses. People underestimate him all the time, and that's what always give him the edge when it counts the most

Great show

Too many people I know didnt watch it because of the artstyle or because there's no girls in it

It did hit me when they unveiled the money, all of sudden I was like "wait where's all the women?" But not a deal-breaker. I like the artstyle, the thick lines and stuff feels like they were going for a manga come to life kind of style. Lots of ugly characters but I mean that's the setting and atmosphere, the bleak, ugly world of poverty, crime, and gambling.

It's also about the men who are stuck in poverty as well. I guess just in general, the author has personally experienced poverty around that time period or heard a ton of stories about this kind of lifestyle around the time period. Usually these types of guys stick around similar types of guys. This isn't the only story Fu... something I forget his name has written about men in poverty.

When they talk about ten million in the subs, is it yen or dollars? Since that's only like 10,000$ if it's yen

If it helps you sympathize with him a little, Kaiji apparently takes places at a point during the 90's where unemployment was at a record high in Japan, highest it had been since World War II or something like that.

I feel like they will have to do something shady to make E-Card not a no-risk gain for Kaiji. I haven't watched them play yet but my thoughts are this:

Whenever a player is Emperor, all they need to do is shuffle their deck and draw at random. The psychological piece is thus thrown out. In response the slave player would play around the third round or something to maximize their statistical chances, but in any case the Emperor has the advantage. So Kaiji can just place larger bets when he is Emperor and the 1mm when he is slave, and he will still never risk organ destruction, assuming the Yakuza are truthful.

-You have to see the card first
Shuffle the deck, pick up the top card, look at it, play it

Or shuffle the cards, choose a number in your head, then look and play the card with that number from left to right

Kaiji loses more games than he wins. It might not be the type of loss that gets him killed, but he almost never comes out an outstanding winner, just alive.

Well pretty much since the pachinko game where he won big, he's actually literally only been winning big

The manga apparently goes for a couple more books (the anime adapts the first two books). I do believe Madhouse is animating a spin-off series about Tonegawa in the near future.

Yeah there are 3 huge games that are finished after where the anime ends. They're all really good imo, though some people find the mahjong one hard to read despite the heavy simplification of the game
