Well, since they're alone you want to make sure you're not a creep about it. Don't sneak up on them, for sure. Approach from a distance and maybe ask a question regarding nearby items and then try to strike up a conversation from there.

Maybe avoid the fast food situation. Those chicks might be greasy.

For a clothing store, grab something cool and maybe approach them and say that you're curious whether or not it would look good on you and ask their opinion. BOOM. You just opened a door to dialogue.

I have a second date tonight. We're seeing a movie at 9pm. Likely going to have only one drink because we live fairly far apart, and the theater is between us, so we both have to drive.

We likely won't be out until 1130, and the problem is she has a dog, so she will likely have to head out back to her place.

I would like to avoid it. It's likely 20 minutes to her place without traffic, so by the time we get there, it'll be close to midnight. I also really hate sharing a bed with someone else.

Plus she said she's seeing family all day tomorrow so she probably will want to be at least semi well-rested, and might even be getting up earlier than I would like on a weekend

Wow, that's a tough one. Honestly, if you don't want to drive there, your best hope is for some car play. You'll have to try your best with that one. If you end up wanting to go over there, then mention her dog at the beginning of the date, ask to see a pic, and maybe towards the end mention wanting to see her dog in person sometime if things are going well.

Seriously. I've wingmanned to the point of getting him into conversations, but he makes no progress. Yes he complains plenty about it.

He's in his 20's and I don't know how to help him. I could easily see him reaching his 30's and being very lonely.

What 'practice' could help him out. He's average looking, so his ideal super hot woman is probably never going to approach him, unless he's flaunting cash.

Too bad I have the chronic disease where I delete most of my less close friends randomly. I surely would have set up a group hang out.

He's about to go to graduate school for like 2-3 years now, and he started having a bit of a nervous breakdown when he tried to imagine himself socially fitting in. I think we'll still be in close contact for a few more months.

I don't know what I can do for him, since he basically doesn't function at social settings.

Maybe if we became regulars at a place where women often work? He might be able to get some experience from just talking to staff. Hmmmm

Other than that, Id just wish he'd stop making "tfw no gf" caliber jokes every time we talk.
