Trump probably believes he can issue pre-emptive pardons. Like, a pardon for any and all crimes he may be charged with in the future.

He could potentially issue a pre-emptive pardon to himself, his family, and every republican member of congress. Maybe he could also threaten to revoke the pardon to any congressman who votes against him on a bill. This might help him get some leverage.

When the whole thing is over, things might get cleaned up with some presidential pardons, the former New York mayor told the Daily News.

would not be pre-emptive; clearly is a message to manafort: don't make a deal and we'll cover your ass

Meh. Details. Just wait until Ginsburg retires from the Supreme Court and Trump will put in a judge who can fix that little thing.

Presidential pardons can't cover state prosecutions, no.

Who's gonna stop them? You can't exactly appeal their decisions to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. I mean you should, but unfortunately it's not possible.

I'm no lawyer, but the pardon power is pretty far reaching. Ford pardoned Nixon before he was charged with any crimes.

It was controversial but it's not like if there was court decision confirming that it was legal. Congress decided to drop the impeachment

No, but assholes like Gorsuch can "interpret it" to fit his bigoted views. He already tried to do it regarding the right to privacy.

His argument is "when the founders wrote the constitution email and phones didn't exist, so the constitution didn't mean those, therefore, you got no right for privacy".

The conservatives will come up with a reasoning like "the founders didn't envision black, hispanic and middle eastern people when they wrote the term "people" and "rights", therefore they got no rights"

I dont understand the justification for putting him in jail, Giuliani, 74, said. You put a guy in jail if hes trying to kill witnesses, not just talking to witnesses.

What in the literal fuck.

I know, their "textualist" bullshit is so shallow.

And it demonstrates how outdated the Constitution is. For something people love too much to change, they sure love to vaguely interpret it and refuse to acknowledge faults in it.

It's fairly outdated, sure.

But we could never come up with a better document nowadays. The founding fathers loved their country and were non-partisan. Now you'd have democrats trying to make an amendment like "male votes should count 1/2 to make up for the patriarchy" and republicans making amendments like "BTW people of color aren't real people", and that is why touching the constitution in this day and age would be dangerous and difficult.

Congress dropping the impeachment had nothing to do with Nixon getting pardoned. Impeachment only strips the person of their position, since Nixon was no longer a President they couldn't stripe that from him.
