Actually, it was controversial. It was quickly shot down, though, because the whole thing was mocking the ridiculous way that some methods actors act and how white people often perceive black people. It wasn't making fun of black people. Also, no, it wouldn't be any different today. There are shows on TV nowadays that make way worse statements, in less clever ways, with no purpose other than to shock.

Like he said, some people did complain, but the vast majority recognized that the joke was not at the expense of black people, but at the expense of actors who think they can flawlessly act like black people. It turned out the same for the Simple Jack thing.

They'd do fine with it today in the exact same way they did ten years ago: leak the 'Simple Jack' and 'full r*****' angle in prerelease so that it became the controversial lightning rod and shifted the attention away from the blackface.

Historically the problem with blackface is that it was used to mock and play up super offensive stereotypes.

That wasn't what it was used for in Tropic Thunder so I don't see the issue.
