Playing through all my Y games continues with the 4th main installment of the Yakuza series and 2nd on PS3. The game ditches the single protagonist setup of the first 3 games and gives you 4 characters with their own 4 chapter mini-arc before they all come together at the end to solve the mystery and take care of business.

Akiyama is the first you play as and ended up being my favorite of the new characters introduced. If you had told me Kiryu was done after 3 and 4 was going to start with a new protagonist I could have bought Akiyama as that protagonist. He's charming and funny, uses his money to try to change peoples lives for the better and had a ton of combos at his disposal just like Kiryu. Saejima was the 2nd character and he seemed to be the actual main character of the story with the mystery surrounding the truth of the 18 men he "murdered" 25 years ago. Although he has barely any combo variety he basicaly OHKO's everything (and also kicked Kiryu's ass) so it was fun to just play as such a powerful character. The 3rd character Tanimura I didn't much care for. His ties to the story were fine, but being a parry focused character with no combo variety was very boring to play as. 4th character was Kiryu and he felt pretty non-essential to overall plot of the game you have to include him and he's always the most fun to play as.

Coming off of 3's disappointing story, 4's story felt worlds better just because things of consequence happen and the characters end up in different situtations than they were when the game began. 3 felt like it introduced a ton of new characters and directions it could go, but in the end nothing changed and Kiryu was still just running the orphanage at the end even after it got destroyed and Kiryu himself got stabbed in the stomach by Hamazaki (who also felt woefully underutilized in that game). Hamazaki got his face turn in 4 and ends up helping Saejima escape prison and sacrificing himself to help Kiryu so I'm glad he got more of a role in this game. I also like how they linked the story to the events of Yakuza 1 to help it feel like a true continuation.

Trophywise there isn't much to say here it's basically easier versions of the same exact trophies found in Yakuza 3. Instead of completing all the minigames there's just a trophy for each one for doing something in it (like a hat trick in darts for example). The big thing here was Hostess Maker where you had to raise 3 different hostesses to the #1 rank at Akiyama's club, which made them available for other characters to request when they visited that club so you could get their business cards for another trophy. It was fun at first but it's soooo long I was ready to be done with it by the end. In comparison I had a lot more fun playing Fighter Maker where you raise a rookie fighter to win in the underground tournaments. I only had to raise one student to #1, but still raised all 5 fighters to #1 just for the fun of it.

Trophy hitlist

- Finish the story
- Various minigame trophies
- Complete Hostess Maker
- Buy all the dresses available in Hostess Maker (the only missable trophy)
- Acquire 3 Revelations
- Complete all substories and defeat Amon
- Order something at every restaurant
- Collect 20 pieces of trash around the city
- Knock over 100 people
- Walk 100 km
- Collect 1 million yen as Akiyama
- Purchased 5 guns as Saejima
- Win 10,000 tokens at the Casino as Tanimura
- Destroy 100 weapons as Kiryu
- Possess 10 million yen
- Collect all memos
- Craft 1 of every weapon type
- Max out every character to level 20
- Clear the game on Normal without reverting to easy
- Clear the game on Extra Hard mode
- Clear Ultimate Skill mode

Overall it took me about 102 hours which I think was longer than it took me in Yakuza 3 despite having easier trophies, the split into 4 characters made it a longer game overall. I think this game also had the most cutscenes of any game in the series (including later ones). Sounds like Yakuza 5 actually is the longest platinum to get in the series and makes you do literally everything so that should be interesting. Next up though a small break with a non-trophy game for my next Y game as I play through as I need to hook my Wii U back up and play through Yoshi's Wooly World.

Grats! Yakuza 5 is an absolute monster for completionists so it'll be interesting to see how the ACE OF GAMES fares against it.

Your thoughts on the game were fun to read - this is definitely a huge step up over 3 and Akiyama is one of my favorite characters in the series. Part of me wishes he had taken up Kiryu's torch but oh well, guess we'll see how cool Mr. New Protagonist Ichiban is whenever Shin Yakuza comes out.

yeah I started reading some of that after finishing the story the first time and it sure made people upset

In the original cutscene there's even blood everywhere when they're hit with the rubber bullets

This whole series is anime though I expect swerves and nonsensical plot twists at every turn
