It's fairly simple, but the presentation sometimes makes it complicated. By which I mean, the last hour of MGS2 makes it a little complicated.

What is Kingdom Hearts even about?

The first game is simple. Hearts in this series are pretty much just souls. The Heartless are creatures of pure darkness who instinctively and mindlessly seek out hearts and devour them. When the Heartless eats a person's heart, that heart is shrouded in darkness and becomes a new Heartless. That's bad enough, but every single world also has a heart. If the Heartless infect a world's heart, that world is snuffed out.

You play a kid named Sora who lives on an island with your friends Kairi and Riku. All three of you want to travel, but your boating trip is cut short when your world gets eaten by the darkness. You get a magic Keyblade (which you learn can be used to "lock" a world's heart away, keeping it safe). Kairi and Riku go missing. You meet Donald and Goofy who are looking for King Mickey. The three of you travel between worlds, killing heartless and sealing world hearts. You discover a bunch of Disney villains are seeking the Princesses of Heart, pure maidens that have no darkness in their heart. Six of these are traditional Disney princesses, the seventh is your friend Kairi. Gathering all seven of them opens the door to Kingdom Hearts, the heart of all things and a source of great power.

Long story short, Kairi's heart ended up locked away in Sora's heart. Riku is (somewhat willingly) possessed by a dude named Ansem who is actually a Heartless that maintained his human form and mind. Ansem/Riku wants to unlock Sora's heart, you beat him, but Sora unlocks his own heart to free Kairi. He turns into a little nobody Heartless, but Kairi turns him back. The three heroes go hunt down Ansem and end up at the door to Kingdom Hearts. After an ass-whooping, Ansem opens the door with the expectation that the darkness inside Kingdom Hearts will give him vast power, but it turns out that Kingdom Hearts is pure light which just fuckin' obliterates him. All's well and good, but the Heartless are about to go in the door and just eat the shit out of the heart of all things, so Sora has to close and lock the door.

Tough shit, he can't by himself. Luckily, Riku and King Mickey are on the other side of it. The three of you are able to seal the door shut, keeping Kingdom Hearts safe and restoring all the lost worlds.

And then Chain of Memories comes out and things get a little silly.

And then KH2 comes out and things get a little dumb.

And I'm not positive, but I think Birth By Sleep is when things get super dumb.

Or to sum up in a different way the hilariously convoluted nature of Kingdom Hearts:
The enemies called Heartless have no body, they just have a heart.
The enemies called Nobodies have no heart, they just have a body.

Sonic the Hedgehog is probably up there when you consider how everything is connected.

The Persona series isn't the worst, but considering how even random spinoffs are canon and all the games take place in the same universe...

The Zelda timeline is pretty bad too.

I have yet to play it, but the Mother series seems like it would be a little convoluted too...

I think it would have to be a fighting game series since most of them have separate stories for every character. With a roster of 20+ fighters who all have stories that change from game to game, with some series stretching back to the 90s, you pretty much have to have a wiki and spreadsheets just to keep track.

I guess you could see it as them just being characters in the story of the tournament, but some series like Tekken root most of the character stories outside of the tournament so it maybe still counts.

That's how it is in the series. But to be fair, Heartless were the only enemies in the first game.

I'm not sure what they actually intended, but to me this makes them make a little more sense:

Heartless: Just like the real definition. Beings displaying a complete lack of feeling or consideration.

Nobodies: Again, similar to the real definition in some ways. "No person; no one." Nobodies may look like real people, but they aren't normal people. They don't have souls so to speak. Or to put it another way, an absence of a person. (Until later in the series where they completely throw all that out the window.)

Standard conversation:

Person A: I find the Metal Gear Solid story confusing
Person B: What's confusing about it?
Person A: Well I just don't really get it.
Person B: God it's really simple.
*insert 10,000 word essay detailing 14 different timelines not in chronological order, 6 different main characters, 4 of which are the same character in different ages and clones or each other, a conspiracy plot that throws out the main plot, several times over, some bizarre supernatural shit, a bunch of bad character designs that look too alike at times to make sense of anything, various wars on top of wars on top of conspiracies on top of secret missions on top of 4th wall breaks*

Etc.

I do. I actually really enjoy the story. I've also been playing the games sense they first released, and have played through each of them. So unlike a lot of people, I don't find the story very confusing at all. Once you have the whole picture, it all is very simple.

To be fair, this was probably intended. Xehanort was just straight lying when he told his followers they don't have the capacity for emotions. By the end of 2 there's no obvious differences between a Nobody like Axel and the rest of the cast.

The first game is actually extremely simple.
Then Chain of Memories happened and almost every convoluted thing since can be traced back to this game.
KH2 wasn't too bad though. It's still pretty simple to follow at this point.
The events in Days matter in present day, but at the time they didn't really matter. It basically just adds one new character that everyone conviently forgets about in the end. (And it directly connects to CoM so...)
BBS is where the series really took a dive. Most things in the series are retconned at this point.
Then you have DDD which adds time travel and dreams. If the series didn't jump the shark before, it certainly did now.

It sounds like Kingdom Hearts was written around the game instead of the other way around. It's like they must have decided that at X point you're going to meet X character and gather X collectables and have a boss fight and then from there they just fill in the blanks for what those things actually are and why they're there.

I just played through Jak and Daxter recently and it was pretty much the same. Even if it makes sense on paper it's totally nonsensical in the way that they present it because in the game it's only used to tell you that you need to find X items or whatever in this particular area.
