The phrase dates back to ancient times when people saw how awesome cats were and decided to imitate them. But since cats were so awesome, these imitations inevitably failed, and the people who attempted to imitate the cats were ridiculed for their failure. Thus the term copycat carries a negative connotation even to this day.
