Here we go! I'm the best! Okey! AHH-woah-woah-woah! Yeah, pretty much just useful in Mario Kart and anywhere else he's hilariously incompetent. Unless he's singing How Far I'll Go. But I used him so damn much in Mario Kart 64 that there's no way I can't include him on this list. R.I.P. his chances in Smash for the fifth time. :(

40. Matthew (Fire Emblem 7)
I swear I'm not biased because of the name. Maybe we'll see that come up elsewhere on this list somehow, but not here. But among all the great FE7 party members, I'm putting Matthew at the top for being a pretty decent noble thief (I'm actually mad I forgot to nominate him in that trope topic) who is surprisingly loyal to the party, pretty good to use in combat, and for the scene where he finds his fiance's body in the woods. Man I didn't see that coming in a Nintendo game at 14 years old.

39. Chloe Frazer (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves)
Chloe's no-nonsense, cynical-sarcastic attitude is a great contrast to the other main characters of the Uncharted series, who tend to be a little bit more carefree and be a little more silly and playful in their sense of humor. She may be smack dab in the middle of the grey area in terms of morality (at least in her debut), but her genuine concern for her comrades' well-being in times of danger makes her a valuable ally. In Uncharted 2 she kept me guessing the entire time whether she was really on my side or not (though I had a feeling she was). And to be honest I thought she worked pretty well as the lead in Lost Legacy.

38. Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes)
Who doesn't love a character whose very first line of dialogue is "FUCKHEADS!" as he slices a bunch of thugs in half? A badass nerd who lives in a shitty apartment with his cat and kills people to get money for video games and junk food. A wise-ass, even when confronted with dangerous assassins, and a soft spot for pretty ladies. Love the design, love the character.

37. Knuckles the Echidna (Sonic the Hedgehog 3)
Like virtually every character in the franchise, Sonic's original rival is a shadow of his badass former self, but seems to have withstood the test of time better than most of the characters in the franchise. A bit of a knucklehead (pun intended), but still strong as shit and a blast to play as.

36. Luke fon Fabre (Tales of the Abyss)
One of the big themes in Tales of the Abyss is character development. That is, every single character in the game starts out as completely unlikable and with one exception they either grow into a character you love or love to hate. I LOATHED Luke during the first act of the game, but as he slowly became more conscious of the burden placed upon him and strove to do the right thing (and became much less of a shithead, especially to poor Mieu), I really did grow to love the guy and was rooting for him to the bitter-sweet end.

Srsly though, this is a major theme in all of his supports. To be fair, if you dont do his supports, it can be easy to miss since he pretends to be just a thief during the Lyn prologue.

His support with Jaffar is still the best support in the series.

His support with Jaffar is still the best support in the series.

Poor wording on my part, my point with that was to indicate that it is somebody with whom thievery is a big part of their character, as opposed to anyone who has ever stolen anything in a video game, which opens up the category tremendously.

35. Mario (Super Mario Bros.)
Mario is on this list for exactly one reason - he is the main playable character in many of my favorite games, including my all-time #1. Mario 64, Super Mario World, Odyssey, Galaxy, 3D Land, Bros 1 and 3, all absolutely stellar games that I could play forever and never get sick of, and I wouldn't want anybody but our mustachio'd plumber in any of them well, except maybe his brother.... but we'll see about that...

34. Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy)
Has become my go-to main in virtually every game she is playable in. I suspect Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will break this pattern since I try to #1 main a different character each game. But I didn't deliberately main her in Smash 4, she just came so naturally to me that coincidentally she kept up her streak. Otherwise her cool demeanor and soft, almost soothing voice, combined with a design that really suits her cosmic princess role, make her a great character worthy of being placed on rank with the other major Mario characters.

33. Sheena Fujibayashi (Tales of Symphonia)
When we first meet Sheena, she seems like she's going to be a supporting villain, when actually she turns out to be one of the most loyal and honest members of the party. A little clumsy, extremely emotional, and a total badass when she needs to be, I just can't help but have a soft-spot for her, and it seems like most other Symphonia players share the same feelings. Her frustration with Zelos is the best. Oh, and her crush on an utterly oblivious Lloyd is hilarious.

32. Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune)
The dynamic between Drake and Sully is very interesting, because despite their age difference and how long they have known each other, Sully still acts as more of a best friend to Drake rather than a father figure or mentor. Though frequently the voice of reason, he's the first on-board when Nate wants to do something thrilling. It's easy to see where Nate gets his wise-ass attitude from. Occasionally a stick in the mud and a little bit of a pervert, Sully is still one of the most entertaining members of the Uncharted cast and a great guy to have around.
