im guessing TC has never bought a phone? and just has had one given them him by their mommy or daddy?

most carriers, (att, tmobile, verizon) pretty much make you finance the phone. i think when you get the phone, you pay the sales tax (which usually is waived for promotion) and you pay a down payment (if your credit is bad). then you pay like 30 bucks a month for 18 months, during which you can pay off the phone to "keep it", meaning you can unlock the phone for use with other carriers and uh, never use again cuz who uses a phone more than 2 years.

also what's annoying is that i noticed with sprint, that when you pay off your phone, they continue to charge you 20 bucks as a usage fee or some shit. wtf!

if you have no credit, or are a big baller, you can buy the phone outright at MSRP. you can unlock the phone right away and yeah. its yours. but does anyone do this???

also, tmobile has a pretty good program called Jump

you pay 12 more bucks a month in addition to the financing of your phone. once you pay off 50% of the phone (the 12 bucks doesnt count), you can trade it in for a new phone. you're basically renting the phone. in my math, im going to be saving money in doing this. my galaxy s8+ just crossed over the 50 percent threshold and so im august im getting the note 9 when it releases.

im doing this cuz theres no point in keeping the phone. at most youll get like 50-100 bucks back if you trade in the phone after you're done with it. also that 12 bucks a month gives you insurance on your phone in case you break it, so that's kinda worth it.

Most people don't pay the full retail amount for their phones (I did for my Galaxy S8+).

So, for most folks, that $1000 upfront cost is a $20-30/month lease.

If somebody is glued to their phone for most of their waking hours, it kind of makes sense to have one of the top tier models, because they're going to get their money's worth. I am looking at my phone for maybe 15 minutes per day, so having a thousand dollar piece of hardware in my pocket is a waste.

The difference between a $700 phone for $30/month vs $40/month for a $1000 phone for 2 years is negligible to most people.

That's like two fucking lattes extra a month. It doesn't matter what it adds up to in 2 years. If you counted everything like that, you'd see you're spending way more than that on things like coffee.

Also that's for those who don't look for deals or get it at launch. Most other phones with the 4 carriers are pretty much B1G1 these days.

Me. I usually keep my phones for 3+ years. I purchased the new iPhone 8+ and got the 2nd one free as T-Mobile had a deal. I got the rebate to pay off the second phone and dropped the 700 on the first one after 2 months on the bill.

I work 20 hours for minimum wage, but I live with my mom. I had a 6-PLUS and my contract ended a year ago so I got a 256GB iPhone X. Thanks to the trip to AT&T my mom decided to cut her $10 iPad service and AT&T Navigator (also $10). So even though it was an extra $38/mo minus the $80 I got for trading in my iPhone 6-PLUS, she's only charging me $20 and we're on a family plan.

So whatever. What else am I supposed to do...like find a job or something? Pray for me (im not religious, i was jk). I need something....this is ridiculous. I can't even work 40 hours a week if I wanted to.

service is different than phone. cell phone bills are pretty expensive they wring the consumer every dime they got.
it does help when other family members are covering part of the bill on a multi plan.
