and all my pokemon are like level 38ish

Wtf, I was done with Red/Blue in like 20 hours with all my pokes around level 50-60. Why does it feel like Johto is so slow and low leveled?

It really is, if you have a 6 mon team then experience will be spread very thin.

And the Elite 4 in GSC have really low levels, highest iirc is 50.

I only have 4 serious pokemon on my team though. The other 2 are HM slaves. My highest is 40 and my lowest is 35

And all the wild Pokemon are level 25 around here. How the fuck are you supposed to grind with that? The level curve in GSC has always been so wonky

This is the primary reason I don't care for gen 2. The level curve and Pokemon/item distribution are just awful. The fact that Houndour/Houndoom are post-game only is just plain stupid.

That too. Houndoom is one of my favorite pokemon and you can't even get him until Kanto. That's horseshit.

I still like Gen 2 though >_>

Ding. I never get why people say it's the best region. Half the good stuff is in kanto. Even if you're arguing it's the best gen, it's just eh.

For what it's worth, my first run of gold version I grinded in the last room of victory road till I could nuke the first e4 member, then would exp boost my feraligatr enough that he could basically secure me a win through the place with the hyper potions and revives I bought using the halved prize money because you had to faint to get back to the league entrance. It's not that it's a tough e4, they just have two or three things that can get unnecessary KOs on you.

Well first I played through Blue and completed the dex with my girlfriend who played through Red. Then I played through Gold, got every Pokemon obtainable in that game (about 100 hours) and then played through enough of Silver to get the rest, and then I migrated everything from Blue/Gold/Silver to Crystal and played through that in full. It was a sweet moment when I finally completed the pokedex.

I actually did this a couple years ago starting with Fire Red/Leaf Green all the way up through Omega Ruby. I got every single Pokmon except for Diancie. It was at the time that they were doing the Pokmon 20 years giveaways, so I was able to get a lot of the legendaries legit, but they didn't give out Diancie :(

Basically, once you start heading to Mahogany Town, the amount of trainers you encounter craters and the levels of wild pokemon virtually flat-line. Claire and the E4 each represent minor spikes, but then you get to Kanto and the level-curve is basically flat except for Blue. Then you go to Mt. Silver, featuring wild pokemon in the 40s and Red, who represents a huge level spike.
It's miserable and easily the game's worst aspect. Naturally, they didn't bother fixing it in HG/SS.

In HGSS, if you were at the Indigo Plateau, you could fly to either side. But in GSC, you either had to fly to Virdian City, walk through grass to get to Mt. Silver, then fly to Johto. Or vice versa, you had to fly to Mt. Silver, walk through grass to get to Rt. 28, then fly to Kanto.

Either way, you had to risk encounters in both sides >_> The train is probably the quicker way to go, but it's still kinda slow.

Thats only in the remakes. In Crystal you have to cross the border or take the train.

I mean, yeah there's some good gen 2 pokemon in johto but mostly you just encounter old things throughout every route alongside new things, still tons of geodude and zubat in caves, later on onix start to show up but you can completely miss most of the johto caves because the story doesn't require you enter them for the story and backtracking through a level 9-13 area to find a surf spot in basement 2 that leads to a waterfall or whirlpool isn't exactly something a person following the direction the game points you in. And what's it get you to go into those areas by backtracking? A weekly available lapras that only one NPC mentions the date for, an area with misdreavus who in crystal at least you can find in Mt. silver, and the guy who gives you a tyrogue. Oh and a few of the type boosting hold items.

Meanwhile kanto, an old region that is locked to post game, got reduced in some areas or had things cut entirely, yet has several gen 2 Pokemon like murkrow and houndour. Which sucks, because you see the latter at least a few times before beating the champion.

This is especially awful because they locked dark types, a brand new type entirely, to the post game.

Sure, it's in the game and you get access to it in time. But not being able to access one of the new selling points until you beat the main story takes away from the appeal of the new region since it has the new things in the old one.
