I think the biggest issue for King K. Rool is that he's kinda boring. Compared to Bowser or King Dedede at least.

Even in the DK games they've moved past him.

He feels like he's derivative of an already derivative character. The heavyset animal tyrant worked for Super Mario Bros., so let's put one in Legend of Zelda. It worked for Zelda, so let's put one in Kirby. It worked for Kirby, so let's put one in Donkey Kong Country.
