I've heard the opposite, that MBAM and the built-in Windows Defender should keep you pretty solidly secure.

Then again it seems like Windows 10 is scummy to the hills.

When I used to turn off my computer, the USB fan would stop.

When I do it here, it stops....then starts right back up!

I got skynet in a box and no one believes me.

I recently bought a new computer that came with a free year of Malwarebytes, and I have Win10. No issues here.

Mbam is kinda loaded with click to buy shit now, so it's gone the way of other stuff like Norton. It's still better though if Defender isn't finding something, which it generally will.

I remember Norton on my older computer.

I had phantom HD loss on my old computer...I went down 50GB of my 100 GB in 2 years. Found out Norton was taking 70GB (7/10!) of my hard drive space!

It had been on the computer for 6-7 years and only had 10GB of updates in that time. The updates got much larger in size much faster.

EDIT:I was forced to uninstall, of course. I was going to run out of space.

Besides my CPU turning back on and updates being shoved down my throat without being able to pick and choose... (it worked well in the past, why not now?

...what other dumb shit do I need to watch out for?

I honestly haven't had any problems with defender. Not that a Microsoft packaged Antivirus will be much different than Norton or McCaffee, though less powerful.

Lately I just install mbam when I need it, then uninstall it when I'm done. It's freemium bullshit now. Still works, but it won't for much longer.

Down the road I'll probably end up needing to get third party (independent) software that can curb some of the bullshit I'm bound to experience along the way.

I have MalwareBytes, it was causing a memory leak on my W10 laptop and would force everything to grind to a halt. Had to get rid of it for that reason. MB works fine on my W7 desktop still.

For starters, I wanted a desktop computer and not a laptop to surf the web with. I only got a laptop because I actually don't have any room to put a desktop computer effectively at this time.

And I would have bought a W7 or W8 computer, not 10.

But here I am with a W10 laptop and not a W7/W8 desktop computer.

On my old computer the external desktop fan would turn off when the CPU was shut down.

It does not do it on this one, even when the computer is shut down. It will shut off briefly after shut down, then come back to life.

I'm completely satisfied with Avira, and have been for a long time now - at least since Windows 7. Enough so that, despite the free version being plenty for my needs, I bought the full version just to support them.
