ive never heard of anything other than 2 weeks, must be a cultural thing.

i dont see why anyone would give more than that unless contractually obligated, especially since all the employment here is at-will anyway

I try and give 3 weeks if I can. That way I can get to a stopping point with any of my current projects and transfer all ownership/knowledge of things over to someone else. I don't want to leave anyone high and dry at a company.

I've heard of people in high management positions having to give 1 month or longer notices but otherwise, 2 weeks is standard in the US.

However, when I quit I'm going to probably give them multi-month notice.

I could quit on the spot if I wanted to with no contractual/legal consequences

The longest I gave was 2 weeks, the shortest, 4 days.

Ohio is an "at will employment" state which means I can legally quit at any time for any reason and I'm not required to give notice. but that also means i can be fired at any time, for (almost) any reason and without notice.

but it's generally accepted that you give your employer ~2 weeks notice

Our work contracts ask for a week equal to the amount of years you've been there. It's strange, but I don't care.

I work at-will, but anything under two weeks would cause me to lose my accrued PTO.

Isn't that illegal since you earned the paid time off?

Whether or not a company pays out PTO upon an employee leaving is a company policy, not a legal requirement. Ive had both scenarios happen to me.

Two weeks' notice is generally a cultural courtesy. Gives managers time to transition stuff and for you to wrap up whatever you're doing.

Since most states offer at-will employment though, there's nothing illegal about up and quitting out of the blue.
