3D: Ocarina of Time = Wind Waker > Majora's Mask = Breath of the Wild > Twilight Princess > Skyward Sword.

Majora's Mask is only less than OoT and Wind Waker because I find the time reversal tedious as balls. The way that mechanic clicks with the rest of the game is phenomenal so it's not even really a critique of the game, I just get personally irritated/anxious from it.

BotW was great but the lack of true dungeons was sorely felt, the bosses had no real variety and the inventory management was a PITA whether or not you mind the durability aspect. Story was mostly shallow and had one of the least satisfying endings I think I've ever experienced (They really can do better, WW and SS were both more interesting).

TP was solid mechanically but felt too empty and charmless a lot of the time. Midna kinda carried the game story-wise. I loved Zant until the reveal.

SS, in spite of the awesome dungeons, bosses and a real attempt at story, had a shitty shitty overworld, an obnoxious "helper" in Fi (who is actually as bad as people claim Navi to be) and terrible controls that puts it below the rest. It was also very unpolished for a Zelda game, felt outsourced.

EDIT: Uh, forgot 2D but IIRC the only one I've played to completion was Phantom Hourglass so wouldn't be much help anyway. I've tried all the others except for ALBW but never really put the time into them to get far, they just don't hook me the same way.

I haven't played SS, the DS games, or the Four Swords games.

SS is railroaded as fuck but the controls are good.
If you've played Minish Cap you aren't missing much by not playing Four Swords.
Four Swords Adventures is fun if you like obtuse puzzles, otherwise it's infuriating.
The DS games are abominations.

If you're suggesting that one of the others might actually be worth playing, let me know which would be a good one to start with.

Although in general I tend to have little patience for action RPGs, so that's a factor here too. That's not to say I'm entirely closed to them - there's been the occasional one I've loved (most recently, Witcher 3).

he didn't necessarily imply that they're that much better. to him it could be really really tight between those games. it's very close competition for me tbh

The Season/Time mechanics in the games are especially interesting. In Seasons, every single screen on the map has 4 versions, 1 for each season and there are a lot of cool over-world puzzles that make use of that. In Ages, there's a time mechanic, where there is 2 versions of the overworld, the past and present, which a lot of other Zelda games utilized, but I thought it was probably handled the best in this game.

Also the games have 3 ride-able animals, and depending on the animal companion you pick, the overworld actually permanently changes around that animal's abilities. I always thought that was really neat and makes replaying the game more fun and makes picking your final animal companion interesting.

I also love the linked quest aspect. The fact that the two games combine into one overall cohesive quest with extra content unlocked at the end of the second game you play, giving you a True ending, and the fact that the game actually plays differently depending on the order you link the two games and how the 2nd game played calls back to events of the 1st game... is really cool.

The games were just extremely ambitious and have done things I have never seen in another game, period. I also love that one game is combat oriented and the other is puzzle oriented.

Another cool thing about the Oracle games, was the ring system. There were so many to collect and they actually did cool things.

Link's Awakening is just very vanilla compared to the Oracle games.
I personally think the Oracle games are like the ultimate 2D Zelda experience.
I still think Awakening is a good game obviously.
