Even a lot of religious people that don't agree with it can't come up with a good excuse as to why two adults should or shouldn't be able to do what they want with each other, nor why they shouldn't be able to do what everyone else can already do. If you think it logically through, you can't reach the conclusion that the government has the right to impose what is effectively religious values on individuals, especially while considering that the U.S. government is setup to be free from religion. The only way to reconcile that would be to get government out of the business of marriage altogether, but that probably won't happen either. Abortion could change, but honestly I'm too cynical to see it happen. It's going to be really tough to take it away when it's been legal for so long. A lot of people view it as an inherent right, so that going to be an uphill battle, even if you technically have the votes to change it.
