I think its a great movie. I feel many of the things people bitch about are silly nitpicks from the toxic ass Star Wars fandom.

Yes, it has its problems, but it does a lot more right than it does wrong.

People say Luke was out of character.. come on. The guy has dealt with some pretty insane trauma and has been locked away on an island for a long ass time, do people really expect the guy to be EXACTLY the same as he was in the original trilogy.. 30+ years earlier..

Then people whine about how Snoke was killed off. Star Wars does not need another character like that. Snoke was never meant to be the main villain of this trilogy.. its about Kylo Ren, not him. While I do wish we got to learn more about him, surely we will at some point.

Another thing people commonly cry about is Rey being a nobody. Does every damn character in Star Wars have to be a Skywalker? Or a Solo? Theres already so many characters in this saga that are related to one another, I dont see the problem with Rey being a nobody. I think that makes her character much more interesting, rather than her being connected to some character from the original trilogy. Thats boring, theres enough of those already.

Then Luke dying, did people expect this dude to be immortal? You knew he was going to die at some point in this trilogy, but yet again, this trilogy is not centered around Luke. People cannot accept change, this trilogy is about Rey and Kylo Ren. Luke had to die.

There are some things I dont like about it. Captain Phasma being hyped up as some big villain, yet never does anything and just dies out of nowhere in this movie. Thats dumb.

Heres how Id rank them all:
Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
The Force Awakens
Solo
The Last Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
Rogue One
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace

I like all of them, other than the last three in my ranking. Rogue One isnt terrible like TPM and AOC, but its pretty bland.

I liked it, faults and all
it could have been better, and perhaps it should have been more safe, but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be

my ranking without giving it too much effort: ESB >> ROTJ > ROTS > TLJ > ANH > TFA >> Solo > Rogue One > AOTC > TPM

Fantastic movie. Awesome music, some beautiful set pieces, interesting plot and character development, and several of the most epic moments in any Star Wars movie.

Bad attempts at humor. 'General Hugs' was totally unnecessary and out of place for a SW movie.

I thought it was quite good. Better than TFA in my opinion.

The only things I didn't like was that it felt a little too long (it felt like the scene in the throne room should have been the climax), and that the Holdo Maneuver kinda wrecks what little we know of Star Wars science.

Still, one of Mark Hamill's finest performances. :)

I didnt like it. Im not some super fan or anything, so I wasnt all that offended by what happened to Luke. I just thought the characters and plot were boring. I also didnt like the cheesy/out of place humor. It doesnt really set anything up for the next one and I find myself not caring about any of the characters. I dont think Ill watch 9 tbh. I dont really feel the urge to.

Seriously, the rest of the movie could've been complete and utter horse shit but Kylo + Rey's interactions, the battle in the throne room, the unbelievably badass scene where the captain sacrifices herself to hyperspace into the fleet that was chasing them, and the badass scenes with Kylo and Luke would've still been enough to make it a masterpiece.

The sidequest with Finn and that girl (forgot her name) was really enjoyable and had plenty of relevant parts to it as well. Finn's battle with that female captain was badass.

Absolutely. The idea that "The Force is not for the Jedi to control" is the kind of thing that makes me believe that Star Wars might actually grow beyond the concept of the Jedi in the future.

Everything with the climax was great but it was a rough road to get there.

It was ok. It had serious problems for sure but it also had a decent amount of cool stuff in it, like the Luke/Kylo subplot, that hype af climax, the one really good lightsaber fight, and the casino planet.

Granted, the casino planet scene was completely unnecessary and why were the wasting time complaining about rich people when their allies were dying waiting for them to return but in terms of worldbuilding I thought it was pretty cool.

It's definitely the weakest SW film that isn't a prequel.

I'd rank them:

RO
V
VII
IV
VI
VIII
III
I
II

Basically like you. It had some small issues, but all in all it was very enjoyable. Most of the criticisms levied against it are either explained in the movie, or basically boil down to the fact that the main character is a Mary Sue, despite the fact that this has always been the case in Star Wars.

@VTBM

That is a big part of the problem, it is a sequel, and a middle chapter at that, not the time or place to do its own thing, it should have given some answers and logical ones at that to questions raised in TFA.

If they wanted TLJ to do something different then RG1 or a side story is the place to do it not the middle of a fucking trilogy.

Absolutely terrible.

People going "Well people are gonna be different" are missing the entire point of Luke's character and the disservice the returning characters have received so far in in the sequel trilogy as a whole

The dialogue was stiff, the anticipated confrontations either never happen or was brought down to only a few minutes (or seconds in the case of Phasma vs Finn) and everything is covered in a thin shield of "Oh it's not expected so it's okay."

No, Agent Smith in The Matrix getting defeated by Norton Antivirus is unexpected. That doesn't make it okay.

In fairness, I think this is intentional and E9 will involve KR realizing it. Assuming E9 follows E8, that is.

I mean KR was always trying to be something he's not from the very start so it's kinda fitting for the audience to catch on to the idea that he's not making any sense before he admits it himself.

It had some really big flaws, btu what it did right, it did really well.

I loved everything with Kylo, Rey, and Luke.

I can tolerate Finn's stuff, while it was definitely ultimately pointless, it was intentional, so while not my favorite thing, I can forgive it.

Poe was fucking butchered as a character and handled terribly.

I like it better than the prequels, but less than just about everything else Star Wars.
