I dunno. I am not american and i just finished this book. By no mean it is a bad novel. I enjoyed it thoroughly, the main characters are darlings and it portrayed some time-relevant issues from the eyes and thoughts of innocent children and pulled it off well.

But the book won a pulitzer, claimed by many critics " a must read for every adults in their lifetime" and whatever praise you can come up with, this book probably got it.

It is just not such a groundbreaking masterpiece to me. It's just an honest, skilled writing and intention to tell story and message to the reader.

Maybe relevance, and attachment is the issue. I am young, and not american, and i live in 2018, raised in generally liberal household surrounded by mostly liberal people. The view on the themes like racism, inequalities and other stuff is nothing new for me and stories that brought up more or less the same theme has been done countless time in the time which we are living right now.

Maybe in the time of the publication such issues were quite popular, as it was published during the early dawn of social justice revolution in america, portraying the time that was very relatable for the readers at that time (pretty much most adults who grew up in the same era of the novel's setting)

here's the thing: a ton of those stories were influenced by, or directly inspired by, the novel you just read.

it's like why a lot of shakespeare seems cliche--because we had four hundred years of imitators afterward.

Just about all of the high school required reading books are overrated as hell. To Kill a Mockingbird, As I Lay Dying, Great Expectations, The Great Gatsby, One Day in the Life of Ivan Whatshisface, Of Human Bondage, Huckleberry Finn, garbage garbage garbage.

Though I did like:

A Separate Peace
Of Mice and Men
The Great Train Robbery
All Quiet of the Western Front

I looked it up and that guy is just an idiotic SJW. And i mean like real SJW, regressive left and not the common insult alt righters throw around at everything they dislike or disagree.

So yeah. A book about how bad racism is, and how prejudice can obscure the truth and harm innocent people is racist because n-word is used too much.

The book is racist because it portrays more or less accurate living condition of african american in the south 1930s.

Uug i am sick of people trying to obscure history. What fucking idiots that are so selfish they think they have the right to rewrite history. As they please. Do you know who else that love rewriting history? Dictators and despots.

Good enough. It's really just more or less the changing of times, pre-exposure and 50 years gap of cultural advancement that makes the book just "pretty good" and not "OMFG THIS IS SUCH AN OPUS NOW EVERYONE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DIE OR YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!"

To be fair, that person was also mad about how secondary characters weren't flushed out as well as primary characters.

I think you're overstating how highly it's praised.
It's a must read . . . for kids. It's a great book on race, class, the American south, etc but again, it's an introductory book. A "safe" way and dipping their toes into the subject matter and exposure to racial slurs.
There's a reason it's usually required reading in schools but not talked about a lot afterwards.

The movie however . . . well Atticus deserves the spot on AFIs top movie heroes.
