Nationalism/protectionism has always been terrible policy and the advancement towards free trade has only benefited countries. Tariffs, quotas, red tape, any policy like this only hurts the importer and exporter. All historical economical data and performance proves this.

The only, only argument for it that I can accept is for new, developing industries and businesses that may need a bit of government intervention so that they can survive while they are establishing themselves. Once established, they should be made to compete on the global market.

Removing trade barriers and promoting free and open trade and global world economies will benefit everybody.
