The ones in Thailand? They went into a cave that really shouldn't be visited during rainy season. There is a river blocking their way out and it was hard enough for trained divers to even get to them in the first place.

I don't know if it will take months to get them out but with it being rainy season it'll definitely take time. They can at least get them supplies and medication now.

A coach and some teens went into some caves known for flooding this time of year. They got trapped. Its like titantic with water slowly rising. They literally have to dive and squeeze through tiny spaces to get to them. They are frantically pumping water to try and keep them from drowning, but the rain water is out pacing them. They are trying to decide whether to risk them drowning on the swim out of there, or wait it out and hope the pumps work

because if the kid tears the suit or gets stuck in those spaces that are already super tight without all that gear, then they will likely die, so they will have to start slow and train the children how to use it. Mean time they bring food.

This. Professional cave divers are having difficulties down there. Those kids would be fucked trying to swim out. Likely the safest bet is to wait it out while keeping them constantly supplied.

Yeah. It's like 4 miles of diving they've had to do, though I don't know if that's round trip or what.

The other options are risk a cave in by drilling a hole.

Can't eat or drink if you're underwater. and hypothermia from prolonged exposure and the cold in diving gear would still kill them quick.

It's a tourist attraction. The coach brought them there (they had been there before). Then they got trapped by flash floods. Rainy season is Thailand is fucking crazy. I've seen 1 meter deep floods in the matter of hours.

they won't have a "fighting chance" if the cave floods completely, that's the whole point. they'll be fully submerged. by your argument, best to give people with absolutely no SCUBA experience a set of gear and let them figure out out before they freeze or drown lol

that's the debate at this point. get them out now, or stock them with food, water and other supplies and have them retreat further into the cave if necessary

Not really kids. They're aged 11 to 16. Plus it's a popular tourist destination in Chiang Rai (was going to visit that cave actually but we ended up getting lost looking for a hot spring near there and ended up not having time). Families regularly go there and like I mentioned, this group had been there multiple times before.

They move further into the cave system. There are many large chambers they can retreat into if necessary.

Teens. When I think "kid" I think of someone who is not a teenager. I'd agree bring a 5 year old into a cave system is a bad idea but it's not a bad idea to bring teens into one. It is a bad idea to do it during rainy season when said caves are known to flood however.

I've been caving once in a group with a professional guide. Even though the cave was probably ranked as "easy mode", there were still freaky parts like drops of unknown distance, slogging through mud, or claustrophobic situations.

Example: once we hit an antechamber pretty deep into it, the guide was like "WHO WANTS TO TRY THE BIRTH CANAL?" It was a long tunnel you had to crawl through single file, with no way to back up or even turn your head. I declined and hung out in the "waiting room" >_>

I don't like heights or feeling trapped, but overall it was worth it. Some of the chambers were absolutely beautiful, especially by the entrance - running water, moss and various cave plants and fungi, walls glistening with moisture, etc.

Also, if you ever find yourself in a cave for some reason, don't drink any of the water no matter how clear it looks. Chances are it's contaminated either by coming from deep within the cave from an unknown source, or by environmental contamination/pollution that seeped in over the years through rainwater. At the very minimum it's probably full of funky minerals and single-celled organisms lol

I saw today that they are 6 hours into the cave system. And to that all I can think of is why in the fuck would they even be that far in to begin with. Why? How? They hiked/climbed 6 hours into a cave. The 1 adult that was in charge of this group should be slapped repeatedly by each set of parents for 6 hours and then never be allowed to be in charge of a field trip again. Ever. Or kids in general.
If he gets out alive anyway.

It's actually a 4 hour total journey with the route they were taking. This group had done this trip multiple times before.

It's only 6 hours when you're swimming through pitch black water and other obstacles.
