Now it seems that ads are everywhere, I can't use an app or browse many websites without having them interrupt my enjoyment. I can't even load a Youtube video without being stuck seeing a random 15 second ad. A lot of the good websites were either taken down or changed their policies or layouts (recently, Patreon is suspending a lot of creators) for the worse. Social media dominates and every few years, everyone moves to the next platform.

Bingo. My early college years, 2003-2005. Facebook was still a niche thing for college kids only, Youtube was in competition with Google Video.

Just before MySpace I think. When Google was still being questioned. I really enjoy my fast, and RELIABLE internet these days, but the social media, ad spam trade off is terrible.

You mean free floppies. Since you could just format then and use them for whatever you want.

I enjoyed early 2000s when it was still the wild west. Most of my friends barely had/used the internet while I spent my weekends on it.

When you're young enough so you don't know how to masturbate, but you still no where to find porn. So you sit there all flustered hoping that you don't get caught

I miss that thrill

Oh yeah. I remember freshman year of high school, school didn't start until 10:55 am and everyone else left the house before 8:30 am, so I had a lot of free time to look at such sites.

2003 - 2008

The Internet was still a playground where you could say or do anything for "teh lulz".
Smartphones weren't as common so there was more focus in general.
ISPs hadn't wised up to torrents yet. No threatening emails or throttled bandwidth.
Narcissism was less of a thing since there were less outlets for it. You had to actually be interesting to get attention online.
Youtube was still about normal people.
etc...

Basically '98 or so to 2006.
Actually it was cool before '98 for different reasons, mostly because nothing had security.

Social media ruined the internet.

I'm unsure. I think AI's will solve a lot of the complicated issues we're dealing with within the next few decades like world hunger. I honestly would be surprised if world hunger is an issue at all by 2040.

Banality is a major issue. Like why is Danielle Bregolli a millionaire? It's a fucking insult to society as a whole tbh.
