Quite excited for this one. Lots of praise has been given to this game and I generally don't finish JRPGs but if I manage to find it straightforward and fun then I will complete it. Is there anything important I need to know? What do you think about the game yourself?

Umm... you unlock new limit breaks by using the ones you have a certain number of times and killing a certain number of enemies. The character has to land the killing blow for it to count towards the next limit.

Materia lowers your stats so don't bog down any one person with too much of it. Make use of the "exchange" feature to move it between characters when your party changes. Make note of the materia growth rate on armor/weapons. Some of it has a 0 growth rate and materia placed in its slots will never grow. All ultimate weapons have 0 materia growth btw.

Nah I don't really recommend aeris in the party I'd say just try her out in battle a couple of times to see her animations in combat and then treat her like a rattata that you bury in your pc and never pay attention to again. I kind of like the classic cloud barret tifa setup myself.

I did use a guide though to get 2 secret characters in my party, yuffie and Vincent. I don't really think you could even get them by yourself without knowledge beforehand of how or that it was even an option.

And enjoy. I remember from the very first 5 minutes of the game I was like "what the hell is this ugly lego blocky shit that people have been conning me about???!!" because the graphics are so horrendous. But I say stick with it because you'll warm up to the game and even though pre-rendered graphics was such a stupid feature of ps1 games that makes you unsure whether an area is traversible or when the area ends/next area begins, it's still a fun game and the materia system is like a funner version of the already fun magicite system from ff 6.

Umm... you unlock new limit breaks by using the ones you have a certain number of times and killing a certain number of enemies. The character has to land the killing blow for it to count towards the next limit.

To be more specific, there's 4 limit levels. To unlock the second limit break on a given level, keep using the first from that level. To unlock the first limit in the next level, the character must make killing blows. Certain areas with larger groups of enemies are ripe for easy kills using Enemy Skills like Beta or All materia slotted with offensive magic.

There's only one limit break at level 4 and you'll need to find each characters limit manual scattered around the game to learn it.

Something I always found useful was to keep your party in Fury status as soon as you can buy a pile of Hypers. Fury reduces your physical and magical accuracy by 3/10, but in my opinion this is greatly outweighed by it doubling the rate your Limit Gauge fills when you take damage. I not only unlock limit breaks way, waaaay earlier than usual, but you basically spam limit breaks in every battle.

Aeris with Fury makes your party damn near unkillable since all her limits heal the party. Loading her up with Materia makes her magic damn high while the loss in total HP combined with Fury will make her Limit Gauge charge all fucking day when she gets attacked.

Bonus round: Aeris unlocks a limit break called Fury Brand that charges everyone else's limit gauge to full. Combined with Fury you'll be a limit break machine. Chews through any of the regular story bosses like nobodies fucking business.

There's two easily missed characters, one of which requires you give specific answers to her questions or else she won't join you.

If you get attacked by some ninja girl while walking through a forest on the world map, stop what you're doing, Google how to recruit Yuffie, and give her the responses needed after you win the battle, lol.

The other character is easier, just go to a specific mansion in a certain village and open a safe and get a key to open a door in the basement of the mansion (plus you get a summon, and I think a limit break from it?).

Oh, that completely slipped my mind.

So if you're in a forest and a ninja attacks you, or if you're in a mansion's basement, Google the proper choices if you actually want the characters lol.

I think I only remembered Yuffie's because I missed her on my very first playthrough (I didn't have Internet access at the time). I think I just got lucky with Vincent's, then? lol

Actually, now that I think about it, I think this is right. I may have fought her more than once, but I gave the wrong answers each time. It was one of those mind-blowing things where a friend was talking about using Yuffie to do something and I was like, "Who the hell is Yuffie?"

Alexander isn't missable, you can go back for it, it's just a different path but the same actions.

Game is easy so just sit back and enjoy it. Explore the map when you have the capabilities to do so, going straight through the story misses a lot of content.

Your first chance is the forests between Fort Condor and Junon. You can fuck up the things you say to her and keep re-trying, although I'm pretty sure you lose some gil every failed attempt because she's a thieving bitch.

Edit: and never use the save point after beating her. It too is a fucking trick.

Now Vincent you may want to look up when you finally find him. IIRC if you pick the wrong dialogue choices you can potentially never be able to recruit him.

For Yuffie, essentially just pretend you're not interested in her in all the dialogue and she'll tag along. It is very possible to go through the game without ever encountering her, though. I like picking her up as early as possible, which is really early. She has a subquest in her town that can be pretty tricky on disc 1. Similarly, getting Vincent when you first arrive to where he is can be challenging. Doing it later makes it super easy.
