Soy farmers are caught in the cross hairs of an escalating trade war that only got hotter Friday after China responded tit-for-tat to a new round of U.S. tariffs.

President Donald Trump slapped the Chinese with $34.6 billion in additional tariffs on top of those previously announced, with China hitting back with $34.6 billion of their own.

In the latest tweet prior to the tariffs going into effect, Trump hammered "unfair" trade deals and said renegotiations "are coming along very well.

Soy represents nearly half of the value of the products on China's tariff list and some U.S. farmers have a different view of how those talks are going.

"The math is simple. You tax soybean exports at 25 percent, and you have serious damage to U.S. farmers, said John Heisdorffer, a soybean grower from Keota, Iowa, and president of the American Soybean Association (ASA), in a statement.

The growers' association said it had asked the administration to consider other ways of reducing the trade deficit and arranged for farmers and members to meet with congressional lawmakers to get the administration to rethink the tariffs. I believe that was just the subject of one of Alex Jones's more infamous rants, in which he conflates phytoestrogens with the actual hormone estrogen. Basically, it became another faux scientific avenue for Jones to drum up insecurity about men's masculinity. And if course he began selling supplements to counteract the damaging effects of soy that masculinity.

Deliciously enough, the supplements themselves contained soy. I don't know if I feel the people likely to buy this deserve to be scammed or not. But there is a satisfying irony to it.

"I'm going to bear the brunt of it, I'm going to hope and pray for the best for our country, our corporations like Riverdale and the workers there, the fishermen, everybody. But if it goes awry, I'll stand and I'll be the first one to admit that I was wrong in supporting that."

For now, he says, he's putting his faith in the president.

Their entire world view depends on Trump being some kind of ubermensch chess master who already won 16 moves ago. That, or they don't mind getting screwed as long as the president is white.

I don't know how else you bring someone back to the table who's already bent you over it in previous deals. Of course China will counter tariff, it's still cheaper than renegotiating our trade terms to a more reasonable degree for them, and it gives them some wiggle room to negotiate a better deal as well.

My curiosity is what exactly did you expect when he told you he was fixing trade? A phone call to the country making out like a bandit to reassess terms? Lul.
