it's practically a religion there. and when they see us ignoring it or mocking it, it pisses them off. they just can't wrap their heads around why we don't care about it. that's probably the biggest cultural divide between Americans and Europeans. caring or not caring about soccer

Because it goes against every other sport in America.

We award terrible teams by giving them draft picks. Bad teams in soccer get demoted to the minor leagues.

We have playoffs. Soccer very rarely has playoffs.

Most of our sports use the hands mostly (Basketball, Football, Hockey) Footwork is more important in soccer.

It is very different from all the other sports we have which is why I love it.

Any sport you don't have an investment in can easily be seen as boring. These players play half a world away, the good leagues play at bizarre times for us, the structure of the sport is so different from that of basketball/football/baseball ... I don't think its hard to understand why Americans don't like soccer.

Maybe if Ronaldo comes to MLS soon, idk.

I mean, there is the whole underdog factor here

no one expects America to do well, so it makes it that much better if we win

Ronaldo wont help. We need an American to blow up one of the major leagues for most to care. Hopefully Pulisic could be that guy.

American sports are built to cater towards limited attention spans and the infusion of commercials and soccer doesn't really allow that. You can't have short periods where you have to pay attention and then 30 seconds of nothing. It just doesn't work like that and because american audiences are conditioned to watch TV in short periods of time they struggle to watch a game. They call it slow, even though it is much faster paced than any other American sport except for maybe hockey. It takes 3 or 4 hours to watch a 60 minute NFL or NCAAF game and yet Americans will say its more exciting and faster than soccer which is objectively wrong (compared to 2 hours to watch a 90 minute game).

With all that said though soccer audiences seem to be growing. There are way more people that can talk about the EPL than there were years ago. NBC sports and FS1 have made soccer a decent portion of their programming. MLS teams and audiences are growing. Its slow and probably won't ever be the most popular sport here but it does have a loyal audience that is growing.

And ultimately it really doesn't matter. If you like soccer there are ways to watch it and enjoy it. If you don't like it, you don't have to.

Pretty sure its the other way around. Especially with baseball, hockey, and basketball - there are plenty of leagues worldwide but the American ones pay the best and are the most prestigious.

And then theres a separate category for people being butthurt that the word football refers to an entirely different sport over here.

Btw, soccer isnt always the most popular sport in a country outside of America. Canada has hockey, India has cricket, Cuba has baseball, etc.

This world cup is 60 games in and there's been only one game that was scoreless. That's pretty low.

And in any case, the fact that the game winner can be scored at any point in the game is pretty exciting. In a sport like basketball, you just have to watch the last few minutes.

Americans are just stubborn. Soccer is a great sport honestly. I used to be a stubborn hater but about 3 years ago I lived with a guy who watched alot of soccer and he got me into it. Since then I literally can't get enough of it. Its really a beautiful sport. Individual skill, athleticism, and teamwork are all in play.

You can talk shit about the flopping but your literal basketball MVP is the biggest flopper the sport has ever seen. Harden is no better than Suarez or Neymar. And I could argue flopping wise they are the same but skill-wise, Suarez and Neymar are much better players than Harden comparatively. Lebron bitches and whines just as much as Ronaldo, and Ronaldo is a better player comparatively. For every argument you make against soccer, you can make the same argument against basketball or other american sports.

Its literally just a culture difference. Kids don't grow up playing soccer in the streets/park every week. We grew up playing basketball, touch/tackle football, or just catch with the baseball.
