Are we pretending that the culture that just now allowed women to drive is promoting their best interests now?

Are we pretending we should have any say over what women should wear? You're just as bad as they are, if that's what you're saying.

Im not telling them what to wear. Im saying it doesnt make sense and isnt a form of taking back thousands of years of oppression by continuing to do exactly what their oppressors like.

It's not oppression to them. They don't view it as oppression, it's simply their culture to them. What you view as oppression is basically non-existent to them. And it's really, really hard to argue that something they choose to wear, oppresses them.

Yeah but their entire cultures history is built around the oppression of women. The men in their culture have won in that field. Its brainwash.

You really don't respect these women autonomy do you? You are just as bad them tbh.

I respect their decision to do whatever they want to do. What I do not respect is blatant ignorance to historical oppression as that only furthers the oppression itself.

You really don't get to decide what it represents to them though. By forcing your view of what it means upon them, you're actually becoming an oppressor yourself.

@gunplagirl

No, I dont get to decide that, but they also dont get to decide that it is no longer a symbol of oppression while there are still women being forced to wear them. They dont get to ignore the historical significance of that symbol just because theyve grown accustomed to their own oppression. This religion already sets dangerous precedence around the globe.

I think the thing that annoys me is that it's as if some people refuse to believe that many people, even those in western countries, are forced to wear the hijab. Yes, I get that many can choose to, and that's great, and for them it is a form of expression, but for many people, even in free countries, they're forced to by family, and that just doesn't sit well with me. I can't look at it and feel good about it. For every story about your Muslim friend that sometimes wears it and sometimes doesn't and views it a great expression of their faith or whatever, there are stories like this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/6dxgb3/auntie_saw_me_without_my_hijab_on_and_told_my/

https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/7nfgcw/first_night_without_hijab/

https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/7xeamn/i_hate_the_hijab_so_much/

I feel for them, because I too was raised in a cult, so that's the point of view that I'm looking at this from. For those that have the freedom to wear it or not and choose, that's great, you exercise your freedom of expression. But I'm just saying that I'm very aware of the fact that there are tons of people out there who are trapped in it, and that's depressing to me.

And no, I don't want hijabs banned. That's dumb.

Yeah but the knee jerk reaction for these back patters is that anyone who questions it as anything other than a brave form of expression is a xenophobe or something of the like.

Hijab bans boil down to this: "I know better than you. I think you're opressed, even though you don't think you are. I'm going to oppress your right to self-expression and autonomy because of it."

If you don't see anything wrong with that, then you're too blind to have an open conversation on this, and likely any other topic.

The Confederate flag that's shared and recognized is the battle flag of their military, not the actual flag of the confederate state. So it's literally one of treason and rebellion and represents an army that explicitly fought to protect the interests of the confederate state which is to say, a state that viewed it financially necessary to keep people of African descent as slaves. That is the heritage of the south, and therefore to take pride in one's southern heritage while flying the battle flag of a rebellion that stood against the united states? *shrugs* maybe educate yourself?

Recreating it to mean something else, or taking it away from those who would use it to oppress.

Which reminds me, I was in Walmart last week and saw a white girl wearing one.

"The culture" meaning all of Islam? Islam is not a monoculture. Women could drive in other predominantly Muslim countries long ago. The US just happens to ally with the most oppressive of regimes and allowing women to drive in Shitty Arabia is just a PR stunt for them to make their shitty "kingdom" look more appealing since their oil money is running out.

By the way, the hijab is not religiously mandated. Stop getting your knowledge of Islam from terrorists who love using religion to oppress women.

Are we pretending that the culture that just now allowed women to drive is promoting their best interests now?

"The culture" meaning all of Islam? Islam is not a monoculture. Women could drive in other predominantly Muslim countries long ago. The US just happens to ally with the most oppressive of regimes and allowing women to drive in Shitty Arabia is just a PR stunt for them to make their shitty "kingdom" look more appealing since their oil money is running out.

By the way, the hijab is not religiously mandated. Stop getting your knowledge of Islam from terrorists who love using religion to oppress women.

Funny enough, they recently started taxing people, and they already started hiding their money. Saudi Arabia is going to collapse in on itself in a few decades and women will get alot more rights..... Or it will turn into a terrorist hotbed.

TC is trolling

Yeah. Call me a troll when youve got no more to discuss. Thatll validate your stance for sure.

Considering I actually have friends wearing the hijab

Your anecdotal evidence doesnt validate your opinion. You should know that.

You really don't get to decide what it represents to them though.

*unless it's a Confederate flag or possibly a message I might disagree with then fuck them I'm making calls on the meaning and their character*

Fucking exactly. The hypocrisy here is too much.

Is it hypocrisy? You're saying that these women are being oppressed. Therefore, they need to follow your orders and ban them from wearing what they want. Restricting what they can wear is oppression and literally the type of oppression that tc is arguing against.

"The only way to stop time compression is to let time compression happen"

See my last post towards @Corrupt_Power about how the only people making the assumption that I want the hijab banned are people like you who ignorantly assumed so. Its as if you cant even question something without you jumping to a conclusion.

You said you want the women to acknowledge the harmful past. Like, I can't explain to you how how to be a decent human being, that's something you'd have to pay a therapist to do.

I know the hijab isnt religiously mandated. Its oppressively mandated TODAY by people who view women as less than men. If you cant conceptualize that then were going to have a hard time.
